The Spookiest Animated Movies to Watch with the Family This October

Horror movies, released for Halloween 2024

Animated movies usually aren’t associated with Halloween. While it’s typically the time to stream one of the many horror movies made for a good scare during the creepiest time of the year, there might be members of the family who aren’t ready for the super scary side of October. However, there are plenty of spooky animated movies that are perfect for the whole family to enjoy this October, offering light scares and silly horror plots.

The Addams Family (2019)

The Creepy and Spooky Family has seen many adaptations since its release in the 1960s. In this animated adaptation, The Addams Family lives a recluse life in New Jersey, but Wednesday, voiced by Chloë Grace Mortez, longs for life outside their macabre home. After the swamp drains, they are exposed to the suburban town surrounding them, where the residents are shocked by the Kookie family.

Soon, the family’s dynamic is tested when cutthroat local reality show star Margaux Needler, voiced by Allison Janney, wants them out of their picture-perfect town. ‘The Addams Family’ is a fun but heartfelt movie about accepting those in your family who may have different interests or wants in life.

Corpse Birde (2005)

Tim Burton is a household name when it comes to spooky animated movies. In his 2005 hit ‘Corpse Bride’ starring the voices of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, Victor, voiced by Depp, is set to marry Victoria Everglot, voiced by Emily Watson, who he doesn’t know. When he practices his vows in the woods and accidentally asks the Corpse Bride, voiced by Carter, for her hand in marriage, Victor is soon swept up into the world of the undead.

After getting closer to the Corpse Bride, Victor must decide whether to join the dead or continue amongst the living. Filled with spooks and fun musical numbers, ‘Corpse Bride’ is a stop-motion animated classic that takes the backdrop of a dark land of the dead and tells a beautiful love story about letting go and starting over.

Hotel Transylvania (2012)

Bringing all the classic horror movie monsters under one roof, ‘Hotel Transylvania’ takes place in a reclusive hotel run by Dracula, voiced by Adam Sandler, where monsters can vacation without fear of humans. When human Johnthan, voiced by Andy Samberg, stumbles upon the hotel and falls for Dracula’s daughter Mavis, voiced by Selena Gomes, he soon finds himself in overprotective mode, not ready for his daughter to grow up.

‘Hotel Transylvania,’ although told through the eyes of a horror movie monster, can relate all too well to parents watching this animated movie with their kids. Watching your child grow up can be hard, but letting them spread their bat wings and fly is the ultimate job as a parent. Despite the heart-tugging message of the film, there are plenty of laughs to go around while watching.

Paranorman (2012)

From Laika Studios, most known for ‘Coraline,’ ‘ParaNorman’ is an underrated stop-motion animated movie from the studio. Norman, voiced by Kodi Smith-McPhee, is a misunderstood boy living in a small town known for its history of witches. Even though no one around him believes him, Norman can speak to spirits.

When his reclusive uncle warns him that he must perform a ritual to protect the town from a witch’s curse cast centuries ago, things go wrong. Soon, Norman must confront the town’s sketchy history and free them from the witch’s curse. Funny, spooky, and wholehearted ‘ParaNorman’ is about accepting the quirks in those close to us and the dark parts of our history and how we can overcome and change them,

Monster House (2006)

Prepping for the spookiest night of the year, 13-year-old D.J., voiced by Mitchell Musso, is suspicious about his creepy old neighbor Nebbercracker, who Steve Buscemi voices. When the old man is sent to the hospital, D.J. and his friend Chowder, voiced by Sam Lerner, notice that his decrypt home is alive and eating anyone approaching its door. Joined by prep school girl Jenny, voiced by Spencer Locke, the three teens must band together to stop the house before it destroys the whole neighborhood. Calling back to campy horror movies of the past, ‘Monster House’ is a fun but scary animated movie about the power of friendship and the importance of not judging those who seem different.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Doubling as both a Halloween and Christmas movie, ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ follows Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloween Town. Despite being loved by the residents of Halloween Town, Jack finds himself bored of his macabre world. When he stumbles into Christmas Town, Jack is immediately wonderstruck by the vibrance of the town and decides he and the creepy but not mean villagers of Halloween Town will prepare for their own version of Christmas this year, but not everything goes right.

One of the most affluential movies for both major holidays, ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas,’ will continue to be passed down for generations to come. It is filled with fun musical numbers that will have the whole family singing all Halloween season and maybe into Christmas.
