As a writer, I consider it part of my job to also be a reader, exploring as many books and genres as possible. Even the darker side, like Splatterpunk. So what is it and why do people love it? This genre goes into the darkest parts of the author’s mind and brings you stories that make movies like The Human Centipede and Texas Chainsaw Massacre look like a trip through the tulips.
What is Splatterpunk Anyway?
Splatterpunk is a subgenre of horror fiction that emerged in the 1980s, with the term being coined by David J. Schow in the intro to his short story collection The Kill Riff (1987) and is characterized by its graphic and explicit depiction of violence, gore, and extreme themes. It goes without saying that this genre is not for the faint of heart or easily offended. Splatterpunk authors frequently push boundaries and challenge societal norms, aiming to evoke strong reactions from readers through their intense and confrontational writing style.
The rise of independent publishing platforms and online communities has opened the doors for authors of this genre, creating an opportunity for writers who may not otherwise be published by traditional means. Although Splatterpunk may not be surging in popularity, the genre continues to attract readers who are looking for unapologetically boundary-pushing themes of depravity and violence.
This macabre genre can range from sci-fi to dark fantasy to psychological horror, and everywhere in between. So, there is a little something for every pallet. That is, if this happens to be your cup of tea, or sip of poison for that matter. Splatterpunk authors strive to shock and disgust, and they accomplish exactly that with their explicitly brutal tales.
Should You Read These Books?
Well, that depends. How strong is your stomach? These novels explore topics that have the potential to be incredibly disturbing to some readers. Notorious for its intense, graphic, and explicit depictions of violence, often featuring gruesome and gory scenes ranging from extreme depravity, SA, mutilation, and psychological trauma. These books push the boundaries of shock and horror to their limit, and then give it one more shove for good measure.
Who Actually Reads Splatterpunk?
This controversial genre is best for mature audiences only. Those who are easily offended or triggered by violence and abuse may not appreciate the raw nature of these novels. The books are often enjoyed by extreme horror enthusiasts, or those who appreciate the darker side of horror. Fans of underground literature and cult fiction are also drawn to the novels as well as those who ascribe to the punk ideology of defiance and non-conformity.
