Thursday Thoughts: 3 Ways to Overcome Spritual Amnesia
Spiritual amnesia occurs when we forget who God is, what He has done, and who we are in Him. Today’s Thursday Thoughts will provide three ways to overcome spiritual amnesia. Life gets busy, and problems come, sometimes one after another. Before we know it, weโre anxious and discouraged because weโve lost sight of His presence and His promises.ย The Bible reminds us, โBless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.โ โ Psalm 103:2 (ESV)
The good news? We donโt have to stay stuck in forgetfulness. Here are 3 ways to overcome spiritual amnesia and renew your spiritual memory.
1. Pause and Remember

โI will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.โ
โPsalm 77:11 (NIV)
When you feel spiritually stuck, pause. Remember how God has been at work in your life. Think back on answered prayers, protection in a storm, and provision in a time of need. Write them down. Tell your story. Testimonies arenโt just for othersโtheyโre reminders for you, too. I have a “God Moments” journal that I refer back to when I’m feeling overwhelmed.
Practical Tip: Keep a โGod Moments” journal of your own. Add to it regularly, especially when youโre in a spiritual fog.
2. Preach to Yourself
โWhy, my soul, are you downcast? … Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him.โ
โPsalm 42:5 (NIV)
David often spoke to his own soul, reminding himself of who God is. Other heroes of faith had to encourage themselves as well. We should do the same. When doubts whisper, when fear creeps in, speak truth. Remind yourself of Godโs faithfulness, goodness, and sovereignty. The Bible reminds us to “hide the word in our hearts”. Memorizing scripture is a great way to ward off spiritual amnesia. I have also written important Bible verses on note cards to carry with me, written them on bathroom mirrors, and stuck them throughout my house with sticky notes. Every time I see one of the verses, it redirects my confused, troubled, and forgetful soul.
Practical Tip: Memorize key versesย you can speak over yourself when youโre tempted to forget whatโs true.
3. Practice Gratitude Daily
โGive thanks in all circumstances; this is Godโs will for you in Christ Jesus.โ
โ1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)
Gratitude is a powerful antidote to spiritual amnesia. When we thank God daily for big and small things, we train our hearts to remember. When we are grateful, our perspective shifts from what we lack to what God has already done.
Practical Tip: Start or end each day by naming three things youโre thankful for. Watch your focus change.
Thursday Thoughts Summary
Weโre all prone to forget. But we donโt have to stay there. With intentional habits and a heart that seeks to remember, we can overcome spiritual amnesia and walk confidently in the truth of who God is and what Heโs done.
