Happy Monday! It’s time for your daily devotional. When Paul wrote his letter to Rome, he didn’t write it with chapters and verses. Sources claim these divisions began in the medieval period, and later editors continued to develop them. Their work helps you find instruction quickly. In today’s daily devotional, thank God for the gifts in the body to perfect believers.
One Body in Christ
In Romans 12, Paul leaves parting remarks to the church. He taught about being one body in Christ and listed instructions on how believers should treat people. In today’s daily devotional, believers’ behavior isn’t left to guesswork; the Bible clearly instructs you on how to be pleasing to God in your interactions with others.
It Starts With Love
Paul cautions believers in verse 3 not to think too highly of themselves. When this happens, people tend to look down on individuals and treat them unfairly. It’s a characteristic of pride and has no place in a believer’s heart. If you find yourself with those tendencies, repent and commit to leaving that behavior behind.
It’s not a surprise that Paul starts his list with love: “Let love be without dissimulation.” Love is the foundation of faith because faith works by love. In your daily devotional, if love doesn’t lead, the flesh does, which profits nothing.
Cast Your Care
In verse 19, Paul warns against revenge and anger: “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath.” Both of these are offered by Satan, who loves to sow bitter seeds in believers’ hearts. The slightest perceived wrong or offense becomes a catalyst. Once anger boils, they seek revenge. Believers who harbor attitudes of anger and revenge are choosing to please the flesh rather than God.
You are to cast your cares upon the Lord, and to forgive others as God has forgiven you. Vengeance belongs to God. In this daily devotional, as you walk by faith, let no demonic influence keep you from walking in love.
Heaping Coals of Fire
Not only are you to walk in love with your enemy, but you’re to serve them if they have need. Verse 20 says, “Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink.” This stops any acts of revenge, for the only God-approved response to your enemy is to show kindness. A response not fueled by love is disobedience. For God doesn’t give suggestions, but commands.
There’s a higher purpose in showing kindness to your enemy: “For in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.” In your daily devotional, your act of kindness will convict your enemy’s heart, testify of your faith, and hopefully, lead to their salvation.
Surrender Your Life
Paul ends with “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” This indicates that when you do what’s wrong, you’re aligned with darkness. Evil forces have successfully convinced you to disobey God and deceived you into thinking your disobedience is justified.
Your anger and desire for revenge reveal that you haven’t submitted your life to Christ. In your daily devotional, God’s Word isn’t obeyed in the flesh; therefore, you must walk in the Spirit.
Renew Your Mind to the Newness of Life
In Monday’s daily devotional, if you’re not dying to your flesh, you’re feeding it by allowing what displeases God to dominate. Renew your mind to walk in the newness of life by not allowing the motions of sin to dominate your flesh. In this daily devotional, don’t be detrimental, but influential, in perfecting the body of Christ.
