Daily Devotional Tuesday Thoughts | September 29, 2026
It’s Tuesday and time for your daily devotional. Psalm 131 is a Song of Degrees by David about rejecting pride. David may have written this song while being chased by Saul, or when he was accused of dancing disgracefully by his wife, Saul’s daughter Michal. In today’s daily devotional, people will have various accusations against you, but only God sees your heart.
Humble Yourself
In verse 1, David begins by denying that he has pride: “Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.” David’s life began in humility as the youngest of Jesse’s eight sons, tasked with keeping his father’s sheep. This meant long days exposed to the elements, grazing, guiding, and protecting the herd.
His father didn’t consider him when Samuel came to anoint one of his sons as the next king. There’s nothing in David’s beginnings that indicates pridefulness. As a shepherd, David killed a bear and a lion but didn’t brag about it. Rather than becoming high-minded, he stayed with the sheep. He accepted his rank in the family. In today’s daily devotional, humble yourself before God; He will exalt you when the time is right.
Remain Faithful
David compares himself to a young child just off his mother’s milk in verse 2: “Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.” Weaned from worldly interests, David pursues God. As a man after God’s heart, he’s loyal to the king and the nation of Israel.
David is appointed the king’s minstrel and armor-bearer. When becoming the king’s son-in-law becomes possible, David feels unworthy, but he fights bravely to obtain it. 1 Samuel 18:14 says David “behaved himself wisely in all his ways.” In this daily devotional, remain faithful where God has placed you and wait on His timing to go higher.
God is With You
David could’ve become lifted in pride when he defeated Goliath, when women sang songs glorifying him, or when he defeated Israel’s enemies. In 1 Samuel 17:28, David’s brother Eliab accuses him of pride: “I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.” Yet David answers respectfully and later defeats Goliath because God was with him. In your daily devotional, don’t let any occasion lead you into pride.
David Danced
When the ark of the covenant entered Jerusalem, David danced publicly as an act of worship, humility, and joy. However, Michal accused him of shamelessly uncovering himself. King David replied, “And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight.” In today’s daily devotional, just as David didn’t think of himself more highly than he should, you must stay humble, even when great things are happening.
Guard Your Heart Against Pride
In Tuesday’s daily devotional, this song is strategically placed after Psalm 130, which includes the line “Let Israel hope in the Lord.” David repeats this in verse 3 of his short yet powerful psalm, adding “from henceforth and forever.” Each time the pilgrims sang this song, they perhaps remembered David’s faithfulness to God, as they exhorted Israel to remain faithful forevermore. In today’s daily devotional, God gives grace to the humble; therefore, guard your heart against pride.
