Happy Monday! It’s time for your daily devotional. As God’s child, you’ve been forgiven, so you shouldn’t walk around with a guilt complex. But if you sin, repent, for God promises to forgive you, and then you’re back on the right track. In today’s devotional, Psalm 130, another Song of Degrees, reveals God’s amazing love and forgiveness toward us.
Cry Out to God
You’ve felt the guilt of sin and the need to make things right so you could enjoy God’s presence again. In verse 1, the psalmist sings, “Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.” As the pilgrims traveled and sang this song, they could remember their own sin and broken fellowship with God.
Being out of alignment with God is distressing. Sin sidelines you from the race, keeping you from advancing. In your daily devotional, like the psalmist, when you sin, cry out to God, for He will not despise a broken and contrite heart.
Confess Your Sin
In verse 2, the psalmist desires that God listen: “Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.” He desires that God hear his lament. Unlike Job, he’s not self-righteous or accusatory. He’s fully aware of his sin and his need for repentance, and that forgiveness belongs to God alone.
Verse 3 rings out: “If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?” Man is sinful, and all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. Yet, he knows he must confess his sin to God and turn away from it. In this daily devotional, sin is never justified, for Romans 8:2 declares that “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”
He Loves and Forgives
Verse 4 reveals God’s nature: “But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.” Others may not forgive you; you may struggle to forgive yourself, but God forgives. Hosea 11:9 declares, “For I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee.” God loves you, and He offers you forgiveness.
He’s not to be feared because He’s harsh, but because His love is so great that your response is godly fear. In your daily devotional, 1 John 1:9 proclaims, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Don’t hesitate to run to your faithful and loving God who meets you with open arms.
Wait on the Lord
The psalmist expresses hope in God’s favor: “I will wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.” After crying out to God, the psalmist will now wait, or trust, in the Lord to hear His plea. As the pilgrims sang, they called upon the whole nation to trust in the Lord, Israel’s sole salvation.
Stand on God’s Word in faith, for His promises are yes and amen. Wait on God, not for His mercy alone, but as you desire the Giver, not just the gift. In this daily devotional, vow that nothing will stop you from trusting God above everything or anyone else.
Hope in Your Merciful God and Redeemer
In Friday’s daily devotional, the psalmist waits on God even more vigilantly than Israel’s watchmen wait for the morning. Verses 7 and 8 close this song, exhorting Israel, as a nation, to place its hope in God, the merciful Redeemer: “He shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.” In today’s daily devotional, trust your ever-faithful God, whose love and forgiveness are amazing.
