How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say

Trying to figure out how to pray when you don’t know what to say can feel like trying to write with an empty pen. Frustrating, right? But here’s the thing – we’ve all been there. Whether you’re overwhelmed, distracted, or just out of words, prayer doesn’t require perfection. It requires heart. John Bunyan said, “In prayer, it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart.” If you’re having a hard time finding the words to pray, read on for some tips to help you keep the conversation flowing with God.

When You Pray – Start with God’s Word

Think of the Bible as a ready-made script. The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) is a simple yet profound template that gives you the words you need. Recite these verses and suddenly, you find your voice, right? It’s okay to lean on God’s Word for inspiration. After all, it’s His book. Look for other prayers in the Bible, like the Book of Psalms, and repeat them as well.

Let the Spirit Lead You

Ever had one of those days when even “Dear God” feels heavy? Enter Romans 8:26-27. The Spirit covers for you when words fail. Cue the sigh of relief! Sometimes, your most honest prayer is tears, silence, or a heartfelt “Help.” God hears it all.

Phone a Friend (Literally or Figuratively)

Sometimes, prayer is a team sport. Reach out to a friend you trust for a little spiritual tag-team action. A simple, “Can you intercede for me?” can deepen connections and remind you that you’re not alone.

Journal Your Thoughts

If speaking feels too complicated, consider writing instead. Grab a notebook, open a doc, or even jot down thoughts in your phone. Pour it out, unfiltered. Journaling helps untangle emotions and can turn your inner noise into intentional conversation. Bonus? You’ll have a journal to look back on when you need reminders of God’s faithfulness.

Pray for Someone Else

Feeling stuck in self-focus? Shift attention! Bring petitions to God for others and watch your words multiply. Your family, coworkers, or even that barista who smiled at you this morning might benefit from your intentional thoughts. James 5:16 tells us the prayers of a “righteous person” are powerful. And guess what? That’s YOU, imperfections and all.

Create a Gratitude List

Gratitude flips the switch from “stuck” to “flow.” Begin listing all the kindnesses, blessings, and little mercies you’ve experienced today. Suddenly, a quiet “thank You for this morning’s coffee” becomes a deeper appreciation of all God provides.

Be Still and Listen

Sometimes, we get so caught up in talking that we forget to listen. God doesn’t need a monologue from you. Sometimes, being quiet and creating space for His voice is best. A great deal of clarity can come when we are still before the Lord.

Why This Matters

Listen, this isn’t about performing Olympic-level spiritual gymnastics. Prayer is about being present in the relationship. When you run out of words, God is still there listening to your heart and your tears. Whether it’s through a simple “thank You,” a cry for help, or just a whisper of His name, every word (or no word) matters. Remember, connection comes in all kinds of ways. After all, even silence has sacred power.
