Authors Criticize Publisher Spines For Charging Ludicrous Prices for AI Editing

The emergency of Spines, a publishing AI startup, has completely shaken the book industry. Notably, the company has been harshly criticized by industry figures, who labeled it ‘exploitative’ and ‘opportunistic’ for its practices. Ultimately, Spines offers various writing services, including editing, formatting, designing, and circulation, with AI facilitating these processes. Specifically, authors may have to pay around $1,200 to $5,000 to use these services.

Spines Publishing Company

Yehuda Niv, the co-founder of Spines, has experience managing a publishing business in Israel. In fact, she has received $16 million in funding with her new venture. Furthermore, Spines aims to significantly decrease the time it takes for authors to publish their books, shortening the overall process to about two or three weeks. What’s more? The company allows authors to retain 100% of their royalties. Despite these promises, however, people continue to question their legitimacy. Arguably, critics believe their model is essentially self-publishing or vanity publishing but under a different name.

Various Publishing Options

Through Spines, authors are encouraged to pursue an alternative publishing method rather than more traditional routes. Although aspiring authors approaching publishing agencies is common, the rejection rate remains staggering with 99% of authors being turned down. This rejection forces authors to explore other options with some turning to vanity publishing. While prohibitively expensive, vanity publishing prices can span between $10,000 and $50,000 for each book.

Conversely, others may choose to self-publish, but authors have to possess expertise in various areas to be successful, which may be a barrier for many. Ultimately, Spines is changing the publishing landscape and is providing fairness for aspiring authors to obtain success. Following their innovative approach, authors can get published quickly at reduced prices, allowing Spines to democratize the publishing process. This approach provides opportunities for authors, who may not have access or were excluded from traditional publications.

Many figures in the publishing industry provided widespread criticism, viewing Spines’ model as a self-publishing scam. These experts believe that the company is preying on hopeful authors charging them to publish their own work and offering little care and attention throughout the process. According to AV Club’s Mary Kate Carr, paying lots of money on AI editing and publishing is unproductive, emphasizing that human editors and proofreaders are more efficient than AI tools. Similarly, Canongate, an independent publisher, accused Spines of disregarding the importance of publishing books and writing.

The Spines Model

Society of Author’s chief executive, Anna Ganley, shared her concerns about the Spines model, believing it a failed route to publication. According to Ganley, the model is unlikely to meet the expectations of writers seeking publication. Alternatively, Ganley worries that AI-based publishing services may lack originality and quality. Moreover, the backlash against Spines also sheds light on the troubling role of AI within the publishing industry. Although Microsoft recently launched its own publishing house, many experts feared it would ultimately cause future problems.

Basically, they worry that relying on AI will cause a decline in quality and a homogenization of content. Responding to these concerns, some authors began questioning the value of AI-generated content. News Statesman writer Megan Nolan acknowledged that AI may eventually gain the capabilities to produce high-quality novels. However, even if this future becomes possible, she questions why anyone would read these books anyway. Even editorial consultant, Anne Hervé echoed the same sentiment, agreeing that human creativity and critical thinking are more essential than AI tools.

Final Thoughts

Authors can obtain several benefits from integrating AI in editing and publication. Namely, enhanced consistency, reduced costs, and improved efficiency are some perks of using AI tools in the writing process. However, the over-reliance on AI can cause potential writing errors, lack of nuance, and an intermixing of content. Balancing technology and human oversight is essential in applying AI editing tools safely and effectively. Achieving this balance is possible by using these tools for editing and proofreading while human authors and editors are reserved for creative input.
