Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir: What We Know So Far

spider-noir spider-man

The Spider-Noir version of the iconic, web-slinging superhero first appeared in the blockbuster hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. As one of the many Spider-Man variants introduced in the film, this spider character was one of the few to stand out most. This darker version of Peter Parker is a detective instead of a high school student and lives during the 1930s when the Great Depression and World War 2 were happening. What’s more? Spider-Noir was voiced by Nicolas Cage. Due to the character’s break-out role, it was only a matter of time before someone would capitalize on it.

Ultimately, Sony’s projects centering on the amazing Spider-Man have been polarizing. Although they have great superhero films on their resume, those movies have mostly been collaborative efforts with Marvel. It’s their solo films that have driven the negative backlash. Even with their successful animated Spider-Verse series, there recent films surrounding Spider-Man’s villains haven’t been good either. Still, with Nicolas Cage’s character, Sony hopes to show Spidey fans and critics that they can make quality superhero films like Marvel.

The Backstory of Spider-Noir Character

As mentioned previously, this version of Spider-Man, who goes by Peter B. Parker, lives in a parallel world called Earth-90214 that’s stuck in the 1930s. Moreover, Spider-Noir doesn’t get his powers from a radioactive spider similar to his main counterpart but from a powerful Spider God instead. Conversely, Spider-Noir loses Peter Parker’s light-hearted and beloved personality for a  grittier one similar to The Punisher and Batman. To further separate himself from the iconic superhero, Spider-Noir has no problem killing criminals with his two revolvers.

Even the backstory that drives Peter Parker to crime fighting is darker than the mainstream version. In Noir’s universe, Uncle Ben would be killed by Adrian Toomes, the Vulture, who is also a brutal cannibalistic serial killer instead of a scavenger. While Toomes would kill Uncle Ben, he would act on behalf of the notorious mob boss, The Goblin. Unsurprisingly, Uncle Ben’s death inspires Parker to become a vigilante detective who aims to take down The Goblin and his gang of criminals.

Noir Streaming on MGM+ and Amazon

Since the new Spider-Man series, Noir, is still in early development, its release date is unknown and will continue to be so for some time. However, talks between Sony and Amazon Prime would start in November 2022 with a partnership between the two in regards to developing a show around a different spider character, Silk. According to Variety, Noir started in development in February 2023 before Nicolas Cage was attached to the project, but these are only speculations. Currently, MGM+ will debut Noir for American audiences, and Amazon will launch the show on Prime Video for international audiences.

Spider-Noir’s Cast and Crew

On May 14th, Spider-Noir fans were finally given good news surrounding the television series. Amazon would announce that Nicolas Cage was reprising the web-slinger’s role. Although Cage had voiced the character in the two Spider-Verse animated films, Noir will be Cage’s return to the Marvel franchise since 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence.

With Cage returning to the main role, Sony can round up the cast, which seems to be coming together nicely. New Girl and Fargo actor Lamorne Morris will play Peter Parker’s ally and co-worker, Joseph “Robbie Robertson. For those unfamiliar with the character, he appeared in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film trilogy by the late actor Bill Nunn.

In addition to Mottis, actor Brendan Gleeson, who played Harry Potter’s Mad-Eye Moody, would join the cast. However, since Gleeson was cast in an undisclosed role, who he’ll be playing is not yet known. So far, any other cast members haven’t been announced, but with their track record, we can expect Sony to find good actors and actresses to fill the gaps.

The producers of the critically acclaimed Into the Spiderverse, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, will produce Noir. Additionally, Oren Uziel will be the show’s writer, who has worked with Miller and Lord on 2014’s 22 Jump Street. Moreover, Emmy-Winner Harry Bradbeer will direct and produce Noir’s first two episodes.
