The new official trailer for Sonic 3 has dropped, sparking excitement everywhere. It gave fans the first clear look at the main antagonist, Shadow the Hedgehog. And importantly, they are happy with his accurate looks, from quills to hover shoes. The preview seemed to hint at a possible change in the origins of Shadow. How big of a change is unknown, though Sonic fans remain enthusiastic.
A Sega Saga Getting Bigger
With the inclusion of Sonic 3, the number of live-action Sonic movies is now three. The series began with the film that fans helped change, Sonic the Hedgehog. The titular character, voiced by Ben Schwartz, takes on the maniacal mechanical genius Dr. Robotnik. Green Hills sheriff Tom Wachowski and his veterinarian wife Maddie join the blue hero. The feature showcases Sonic’s slow ascension to hero as he learns of the strength of his power. It even created an opening for its sequel, which premiered two years later.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continues the story of the prior film. While Tom and Maddie are out of town, Sonic finds himself on a new adventure. The hedgehog even meets a new friend, Miles “Tails” Prower, a clever two-tailed fox. They must search for the legendary Master Emerald, but their quest has many obstacles. Standing in their way are the battle-hardened Knuckles and the vengeful Dr. Robotnik. The movie is a much-loved installment and reveals the fan-favorite Shadow the Hedgehog.
The Origins of Shadow the Hedgehog
The antihero Shadow the Hedgehog is the second most popular character in the Sonic franchise. He sports an outwardly edgy and aloof personality that hides a tragic backstory. The hardcore hedgehog’s story begins with Dr. Gerald Robotnik, grandfather to Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Gerald Robotnik was a revolutionary scientist who strove to bring peace and prosperity to Earth. He eventually constructed ARK, an intergalactic space colony that would serve as humanity’s new home. His granddaughter Maria was born on the station but could never leave it.
Maria contracted a fatal cancerous illness with no known cure. Robotnik was determined to save his granddaughter and established an immortality experiment named Project: Shadow. His endeavors led to him bargaining with Black Doom, a leader of an alien race. Robotnik was given a sample of Black Doom’s blood and created Shadow. He and Maria lived a peaceful life together, but that ended when GUN invaded ARK. Someone shot Maria, ending her life as she rescues Shadow. When Shadow landed on Earth, GUN officials captured his escape pod and sent him into cryosleep.
Sonic 3’s Changes With Shadow
It is currently unknown what the new movie could change with Shadow. However, some things have remained the same from the source material. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, it is revealed that Shadow is in suspended animation. He was found in the same condition in the video game, Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic 3’s movie trailer reveals that the hedgehog will keep his connection to Maria. Aside from these aspects, everything else could be different for the movie.
Shadow could have a different creator other than Gerald Robotnik. In the trailer’s end scene, Dr. Eggman recognizes a man who’s appearance is similar to his design. However, it is unsure if the person is Gerald as Eggman called him “Papa”. Shadow may or may not come from a Black Doom’s blood, but he is defined as alien according to Sonic. The project’s original motive could possibly change from curing Maria, and be a development weapon like the Biolizard. There’s so many possible changes for Sonic 3 as Ian Flynn writes the Sonic movie-verse. The movie will premiere on December 20th.
