The Wall Saga: Solar Opposites Music Explains Hidden Side Story

Solar Opposites: The Wall

Most people know about the science-fiction show Solar Opposites on the Hulu streaming service. It’s a popular show created by Justin Roiland’s Solo Vanity Card Productions! in Burbank, California. While a show about aliens, it’s also known for its beloved side plot, The Wall. The side story follows the survival of miniature humans living inside a wall. The Wall received a new installment in the fifth season, along with a new soundtrack.

Looking at Solar Opposites Season Five

Created by Justin Roiland, Solar Opposites showcases extraterrestrial refugees from the planet Shlorp. Korvo, Terry, Yumyulack, and Jesse escape their home’s destruction and land on Earth. Their mission now is to protect their assigned Pupa and terraform the world. The Pupa is a living supercomputer containing their homeworld’s history. Once it matures, the Pupa will become a terraforming behemoth and create a new Shlorp. The maturation process is lengthy, and the Shlorpians get into wild situations until then.

Season Five takes place after the events of the previous installment of Solar Opposites. After rejecting a potential paradise planet, The Solars return to Earth and resume their lives. The only difference is that Korvo and Terry are now legally married husbands. Their union does not stop the family from continuing their hijinks and causing chaos. Such adventures include Krovo and Terry’s honeymoon, creating a private school, and Jesse’s ex-boyfriend’s island. Of course, the Solars are not the only ones having insane escapades.

The Wall Side-Plot

During Solar Opposites, Yumyulack sometimes shrinks down humans who mistreat him or he hates.  He deposits them inside a wall-sized multi-sectioned terrarium and leaves them there. The only actual care the captive humans receive is Jesse dropping in candy. Other than that, the people are left alone to live their lives. But what started as a humorous gag has evolved into a subplot called The Wall.

Of course, The Wall returns for Solar Opposites Season Five, now called The Backyard. The story has a Western frontier theme and stars two new characters: Gavin and Sofia. Gavin is a hedgehog-riding cowboy with a gambling debt, and Sofia’s a bar owner’s niece. The pair must deliver a wagon full of food across the yard. In truth, they are transporting a spigot value to bring back the land’s water. Their journey has them deal with a lizard-riding bounty hunter and his power-hungry overlord employer.

The Use of Melody

Composer Chris Westlake created a soundtrack to match the new Western motif of The Wall. In a featurette called Settling the Score, he reveals he used an orchestra. Doing so allowed Westlake to convey proper emotion and elevate it to a higher degree. Throughout the fifth installment of The Wall, strumming guitars and blaring trumpets are constantly present. These instruments are traditional in most Western movies and shows. There are even whipcracks in the opening song to push the theme further.

Westlake points out unique themes for Sofia and Gavin’s hedgehog Hedgie during the featurette. For Hedgie, he constructed a melody reflecting on not knowing if the hedgehog would survive. This theme plays when Hedgie tries to save Gavin and Sofia. The song for Sofia focuses on desperation as she gets involved in many life-threatening situations. Westlake even points out that his favorite scene was her peeking out from the wagon. Every time she was in peril, her theme adjusted to express it.

Final Thoughts

Season Five of Solar Opposites is a humorous ride with alien hijinks around every corner. There is nothing funnier than seeing chaotic extraterrestrials navigate through society and life. The Backyard subplot is just as good, full of exciting drama. Chris Westlake’s use of an orchestra showcases the Western atmosphere perfectly. Solar Opposites Season Five is a glorious boiling pot of fun, comedy, and drama.

Everyone can watch Solar Opposites from the beginning on Hulu, Disney+, and Apple TV. Viewers can delve into the relationship between Korvo and Terry and the Wall saga. The show will continue for a sixth season, so more adventures are on the horizon.
