Setting goals is critical to self-improvement and progression within one’s overall life. Often, we set them and forget them. There is a logical reason for that. What are S.M.A.R.T Goals?
SMART Goals are a form of goal setting that consists of five aspects. These aspects are designed to help keep the individual focused and provide milestones for evaluation as well as adjustment when needed. This framework makes the goal clear, measurable, trackable, and relevant. The acronym stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
So what does all that mean? Specific refers to clearly defined intent. Measurable means the goal is quantifiable thus trackable. Achievable is just that. The goal is realistic and attainable. Relevant means that the goal aligns with the broader priorities affected by the goal success. Time-bound means that the goal is set within a time frame for completion.
How to Set S.M.A.R.T Goals
First, the goal setter must define the goal clearly (Specific). This is accomplished by asking the ‘W’ questions: What, why, where, and/or which will help at this stage. Start with “What do I want to accomplish?”. Then, move through the other “W” questions.
Next, ensure that the goal is quantifiable (Measurable). At this point, the goal setter must determine how to measure progress. This is important to stay on track and know when the goal is actually achieved. A metrics or data point set can be useful at this stage in the process.
Then, the individual must ensure the goal is realistic and attainable (Achievable). This is a good time to consider resources and constraints that may occur during the process. Current skills should also be considered. The goal setter may require new skill sets to achieve it fully.
Next, it is time to ensure the goal aligns with its broader objective (Relevant). The goal’s outcome should matter to the individual or team. It should also work well and fit in with other important goals. Successful completion of the current goal should not negatively impact long-term goals and priorities.
Finally, it is wise to establish a clear time-frame to achieve the goal (Time-bound). Setting a timeline for completion will create a sense of urgency in the goal-setter, which will help them remain focused. The urgency will also create a dynamic where a plan can be developed and prioritized.
How to Achieve S.M.A.R.T Goals
The goal should be broken down into smaller, manageable milestones by the individual. Doing this will make the actions less overwhelming and aid in maintaining momentum. Out of the milestones, the goal setter can develop an action plan. He or she should pinpoint what steps to take that can be outlined. The person should specify the actions required as well as when to take the actions. A schedule to monitor progress should be set up. This will help determine being on track or getting back on track with achieving the goal. Celebrating the milestones will be pivotal to maintaining motivation. Finally, seeking out support when needed can mean success or failure.
