Slick Rick, the legendary rapper known for his storytelling and flow, is set to release his first album since 1999 alongside Idris Elba. Slick Rick’s last album was Victory, which was over 26 years ago. Idris Elba will produce the album and the visual album, featuring Nas, which premieres June 7 in London and June 13 at Tribeca. Hip Hop Icon Slick Rick has teamed up with Idris Elba to executive produce the 30-minute album. Crafted over four years and filmed across Europe, Africa, and North America, Victory showcases Slick Rick’s evolution as an artist.
The trailer teases Rick’s smooth narration on the power of words, framing the album as both a personal journey and a creative statement. Slick Rick said in a press release, ” This isn’t just music- it’s a bold, in-your-face-statement. Victory is about perseverance, storytelling, imagination, and evolution.”
Idris Elba Replied
This isn’t just music—it’s a bold, in-your-face statement. Victory is about perseverance, storytelling, imagination, and evolution—a visual blend of art and heart. Elba adds, “Working with Slick Rick…back home in the U.K., and then offering the world of hip hop something amazing has been a blessing.” He also stated that “It’s literally a gift.”
Mass Appeal Co-Founder Nas Also Shared a Statement
“Slick Rick and I have a long history of working together, so it was great to get back in the studio with him and create this new record. He has been such an influential figure in hip-hop culture, and I look forward to him sharing this project with the next generation of fans, ” shared the Queensbridge MC.
The album features appearances from Nas, Giggs, and Estelle, and is directed by Meji Alabi, best known for his work on Beyoncé’s Black Is King. Also joining the creative team are engineer Young Guru and legendary hip-hop photographer Jonathan Mannion.
Victory will make its world premiere at SXS7 London on June 7th at Shoreditch Town Hall, followed by a U.S. premiere on June 13th at the Tribeca Festival in New York City, and will include Q&A sessions with Slick Rick.
Final thoughts
I am eager to find out how this project will turn out. Slick Rick was one of my favorites in his era and was lucky enough to get an autograph when he visited the town of Florence, S.C., some years back. It’s good to know that he has decided to put out another album, and I can’t wait to hear it!
