Sitcom ‘Mythic Quest’ Abruptly Cancelled After 4 Seasons on Apple TV+

Mythic Quest

Apple TV+ exclusive sitcom Mythic Quest was abruptly canceled on Friday, April 11, after four seasons. The show was one of the first exclusives on Apple TV back in 2020 and had a dedicated following of viewers. Unfortunately, fans were not prepared to have the show end. The show has announced that a final episode with an alternate ending will be released next week on Apple TV+.

What Is Mythic Quest?

Mythic Quest is a critically acclaimed sitcom that was released only on the streaming service Apple TV+. It is unclear how many viewers the show receives, as the streaming services do not release numbers, but critically, the show appeared to be well received. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the series has averaged a 97% approval rating, which shows its overall reception by the public. That is one of the highest ratings of any show on Apple TV+, a streaming service claiming to lose $1 billion per year.

The premise of the show is to follow a video game studio that has developed a wildly popular MMORPG, “Mythic Quest”. Described by Variety as a “single cam workplace comedy,” the cast includes Charlotte Nicdao, David Hornsby, Danny Pudi, Ashly Burch, Imani Hakim, Jessie Ennis, and Naomi Ekperigin. Series co-creator Rob McElhenney played Ian Grimm, the creator and creative director of the game in the show Mythic Quest. Hornsby is also a co-creator of the series.

Mythic Quest executive producers Megan Ganz, David Hornsby, and Rob McElhenne released a statement to announce the ending. “Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to a close. We’re so proud of the show and the world we got to build—and deeply grateful to every cast and crew member who poured their heart into it. To all our fans, thank you for playing with us. To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning. Because endings are hard, with Apple’s blessing, we made one final update to our last episode—so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over.”

Megan Ganz also went on social media to express her personal feelings, with a post on Instagram. “You don’t really get to be upset when they gave you four seasons and seven years of working with the greatest group of people you’ve ever met. It was never easy, but it was always worth it. We helped each other through a pandemic and took our hearts and made them art… What do I think? I think it’s gonna change my life.”

Actress Charlotte Nicdao also took to Instagram with her thoughts. “She had no idea she’d book the job, and get to make four seasons of the kind of TV show she had been binging her whole life, play the most complicated and wonderful character, and meet lifelong friends and mentors who changed her life so profoundly she can’t imagine who she’d be without them. Goodbye, Mythic Quest. I’m devastated to say farewell, but more than that — so grateful that this dream came true.”

It is a shock to see such a successful show get canceled, especially after having just completed season 4 and also aired a four-episode spin-off entitled Side Quest in March. Thankfully, fans will get to have a bit of closure, as Apple TV+ announced that an updated final episode will be released next week, which will provide a wrap-up to the series as a whole. While it is possible a different service could pick the show up based on the critical reception, all that is known for sure is that the television series gets to go out on its terms. That, at least, is a win.
