Sinners is finally out with a great reception from both the critics and the audience alike. It currently stands at a 97% on both the Tomatometer and Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, making it certified fresh with everyone. The movie features stars like Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, with a great cast to back them up. With reviews looking positive for Sinners, is there a possibility for a sequel? What about maybe some spin-offs from the film itself?

A Sin of Spoilers Ahead

If you’ve seen the ending of the movie, then you know that only one person survives the night of music and terror. Young Sammie, played by Miles Caton, ends up living through the massacre, which, if you saw the beginning of the movie, you know he lives. The movie makes a big time jump to the year 1992, where an older Sammie, now played by Buddy Guy, owns his own Jukebar or Blues Joint.

He gets a visit from two familiar faces from his past, Stack and Mary, who, earlier in the movie, were turned into Vampires themselves. Stack explains how they both survived and how he made a promise to his twin brother, Smoke, not to do anything to Sammie and let him live out his life. Stack keeps this promise throughout the year, but offers to turn Sammie into one of them. Of course, he refuses, and both Sammie and Stack reminisce about the last day they spent together.

Sammie the Bluesman Vampire Slayer?

In my own opinion, this ending doesn’t leave the film open for a sequel, but it does leave it open to maybe a spin-off movie or two. You could maybe follow Sammie throughout the years as a young man getting older and being haunted by that night. He could encounter other vampires or other creatures of the night throughout his travels as a bluesman, like werewolves or the mindless undead zombies. The other part that would have to exist in any spin-off film is the evolution of music. Would the music be as good as the music in Sinners? We don’t know, but we would have to trust the filmmaker to make the right choices concerning a “Sammie movie”.

Stack and Mary Vampy Life

The other movie they could do as a spin-off would be to follow Stack and Mary through the years. What have they seen since 1932? What have they lived through? How did they adjust to being vampires throughout the years?  These are the questions that would have to be answered. Maybe Stack is haunted by the thought of losing his brother throughout the years leading up to meeting Sammie again in ’92. There’s so much untapped potential when it comes to the lives, or lack of, of Stack and Mary. The question is, how do you do that movie without messing up the moral of Sinners?

Do We Really Need Them?

Like I said before, this movie, Sinners, doesn’t need a sequel. That being said, we live in a world where if a movie makes its budget back and some, they are definitely trying to make it a franchise of films. This is a movie that works as a single story, and I don’t see Ryan Coogler continuing with the storylines of any of those characters. Maybe he could do something within that world with new characters, featuring cameos from some of the characters from Sinners, but that is highly unlikely.

What do you guys think? Are you wanting more from the world of Sinners? What would you want to see happen to those who made it through that night of horror?
