Sega Pulls Total War: Shogun 2 Remaster After Backlash

Sega has pulled Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition from sale following a wave of player backlash over bugs and undisclosed AI-generated art. The publisher confirmed the removal in a statement addressing the remaster’s rocky launch, which hit Steam on Oct. 13, 2026.

The Complete Edition retailed for $40, with a $10 upgrade path for owners of the original 2011 release, according to IGN. That original game, long regarded as a beloved entry in the strategy genre, was removed from sale as part of the relaunch, forcing new buyers toward the Complete Edition instead.

What Sega Announced About The Shogun 2 Complete Edition Pulled From Sale

Creative Assembly and Sega said in a joint statement that the remaster failed to meet expectations. “We’re aware that Total War: Shogun 2, Complete Edition has fallen short of both your expectations and our own standards. We’ve seen your feedback, comments, and reviews.

We agree that the current experience is not where it needs to be. As a result we are working with platform holders to remove the game from sale and to reinstate the original game while we investigate the issues,” the companies said.

The remaster launched with a Steam user approval rating of just 17%, according to Polygon. More than 81% of reviewers told fellow players to skip the game entirely, as reported by GameSpot. Players documented visual and gameplay bugs including characters missing fingers and limbs in cutscenes, blurry textures, glitchy vegetation on battle maps and samurai helmets melting into character faces.

Much of the anger centered on undisclosed AI upscaling used for the game’s in-game art, a detail not listed on the Steam store page, according to Kotaku. The game’s most popular user-applied tags on Steam became “Artificial Intelligence” and “Psychological Horror.” Players also criticized the new user interface as clunky. Porting studio Mataboo worked with Creative Assembly on the remaster.

What The Shogun 2 Removal Means For Players

Anyone who already purchased or downloaded Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition will keep access to the game and can continue playing it even after it disappears from the storefront, according to IGN. The removal affects future sales, not existing libraries.

The remaster had promised upgraded visuals with improved textures, lighting, fog and environmental detail, along with modern rendering, anti-aliasing and upscaling options. It also added optional 2.5D campaign movies styled after Japanese Ukiyo-e art. Those features remain in the game for current owners while Sega investigates the reported problems.

Background On Sega’s Remaster Pattern

This is not Sega’s first time swapping an older title for a new version on digital storefronts. The company replaced Yakuza 0 with a director’s cut in December 2025, a version that included new scenes some players found divisive. Sega is also using generative AI for background assets in its upcoming title Crazy Taxi: World Tour, a detail that has drawn renewed scrutiny amid the Shogun 2 fallout.

What’s Next

Sega said it is working with platform holders to remove the Complete Edition from sale and to reinstate the original Total War: Shogun 2 while it investigates the issues raised by players. No timeline has been announced for when the remaster might return to sale or whether fixes will address the AI upscaling concerns.
