We all have a fascination when it comes to certain things in life. Serial Killers are no exception to that. Over time, we have come to see multiple infamous serial killers. Some have even become the inspiration for your favorite slasher films. Others just have never been caught by authorities. It is those types of individuals who have the rest of the world in their hands, wondering why. Why did they do what they did? Why are we so fascinated with them? Is it just some cruel, sadistic game of life in the end?
Definition of Serial Killers
By definition from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), a serial killer is someone who kills two or more persons over a significant period of time. They differ from spree killers in the fact that spree killers are those who kill multiple people all at one go. They tend to lie in wait for their victims.

Years ago, to be labeled as a serial killer, a person would have had to kill three or more persons over a significant period of time. However, in recent years, the FBI changed its definition. It is truly astonishing how one little change in how a federal law enforcement agency views certain groups of people can change the rest of the world’s outlook on others. This, in a sense, paved the way for more people in history to be labeled as serial killers, but this view only moves forward with time rather than rewinding the clock hands.
Infamous Serial Killers
Serial Killers aren’t a group of individuals that just popped up in the 20th century and moved along with time. No. They have always been around us. Watching. Waiting and biding their time until they take their next victim. Two of the most infamous serial killers of all are referenced from movies to books are: Jack the Ripper and The Zodiac Killer. So what’s so special about these two? Easy, one, that’s not their real name and two, they have never been caught by any law enforcement agency.
Jack the Ripper committed his murders over in England, in the White Chapel area of London, while transcending time, The Zodiac Killer hid in the shadows of Southern California. Neither of these murderers has been caught to this day. In the United States, The Zodiac Killer case is still considered an open and active investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
In recent years, we have seen movies about infamous serial killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy. Bundy was said to be a very charming and handsome individual. Dahmer was more of a loner who wanted to be loved. Is it those traits that we see that grab our attention, causing us to become so interested in a stranger who harms others so callously?
Why is there interest and pure fascination?
We all want something to fixate on. That is no different from the group of individuals known as serial killers. Most of us want to understand what made them tick. What made them do the horrific things they did, and why? Why is the biggest question that law enforcement and the rest of the world have for these monstrous individuals? Because if you think about it, it truly takes a sick and twisted individual to do the things that some of these murderers have done.
