Game of Thrones Star Speaks Out Amidst Divorce News

News broke in September 2023 that popular celebrity couple Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner were getting divorced, shocking fans everywhere. In their divorce papers, Jonas claimed Turner was a “partier” and alleged the actress was also a negligent mother. For the most part, social media perception rallied around Turner despite Jonas’s claims and supposed heartthrob status. Online opinion swirled as the divorce called into question the larger conversation of how our society sees women in general.

Who are Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner?

Turner is best known for her starring role as Sansa Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones, while Jonas is a member of the popular boy band The Jonas Brothers. He is also a member of the pop-rock group DNCE, which he founded with fellow musician Jack Lawless. The couple were married for four years and have two daughters. Turner and Jonas tied the knot in May 2019 during a small ceremony in Las Vegas. On September 5, 2023, news broke that the Jonas Brother had filed for divorce from Turner, citing that the marriage was “irretrievably broken”.

Sophie Turner Responds

Turner claims the first she heard of the divorce was through the filing of papers, saying she was blindsided by the news. She later sued Jonas for wrongful retention, claiming he was withholding their daughters’ passports and blocking them from returning to the U.K. to be with their mother. The Public Rallies Around Sophie Turner

After Jonas’s divorce filing, there was a lot of outcry on social media over the way the media portrays women, especially those in the public eye. Many were quick to point out the unfair double standard to which women are often held, with fans defending Turner by saying, “Anyone asking where her kids are need to ask themselves if they’d ever ask this question to a man…and the answer is no,”. Others were on Jonas’s side, with some users piling on the hate comments, the focus of most being judgment on the amount of time Turner spends with her children and various other mom-shaming comments.

However, Turner’s treatment online calls into question the larger conversation of how society treats women and the double standard imposed upon them. When a man does something, he is praised, whereas when a woman does something, she is vilified. For example, a man is praised for being a good father, whereas a woman is told that it’s her job and to stop seeking attention – she is only doing what she is expected to do.

Lots of people came to Turner’s defense, adding, “You guys realize as a woman that we have an identity outside of having our children, right? A woman is more than just a mother.” Others have pointed out that Turner wasn’t obligated to justify her decisions to anyone and doesn’t owe the public anything in regard to an explanation. What Sophie Turner Has to Say

On May 15, 2024, Sophie Turner is finally ready to tell her side of the story. She told Vogue, “It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother – mum guilt is so real! I just kept having to say to myself, ‘None of this is true. You are a good mum and you’ve never been a partier.’” in response to how she dealt with Jonas’s allegations.

Turner also addressed the influx of support she received, saying she was initially surprised when social media took her side. Turner adds that it is a testament to the time we live in, stating, “If something like this had happened to me 10 years ago, I don’t think I would have had the same support. What do you think? Is this generation more accepting than the ones who came before them? I think it has to do with Gen Z’s ability to see through things like clickbait headlines and gotcha journalism. They are more likely to question the information in front of them rather than just jump to conclusions. People are starting to see through the PR speak and planted stories often surrounding celebrities, and overall, appear to be smarter media consumers than their predecessors.
