Johnny Depp Reveals Alleged Abuse He Endured from His Mom

There’s no doubt that Johnny Depp is one of the most talented and highly versatile actors in Hollywood. After his rise to fame as Hanson on 21 Jump Street in the late 80s, he found himself in a variety of diverse roles. They included working with Tim Burton in Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, Benny & Joon, and as our favorite pirate, Jack Sparrow. But beneath the dreadlocks, prosthetics, and crazy characters, Depp has had a lot of turmoil.

Johnny Depp’s Very Public Split and Subsequent Trial

Johnny Depp met actress Amber Heard on the set of the movie The Rum Diary. After a long relationship, but a brief marriage, their divorce turned ugly and a 2022 months-long trial ensued. Johnny‘s name was dragged through the mud, and as a result, he lost both acting roles and friends in Hollywood.

Although divorce and defamation are never good things, Johnny said the trial produced a favorable outcome for him. Currently, he is trying to get to a normal place. He stated, “[the] jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.”

Born in Kentucky to Betty Sue Palmer and John Christopher Depp, Johnny moved to Florida with his family. He had a rough childhood and said that he and his siblings were often berated and beaten by his mother. He referred to some of his tough upbringing in the trial. Johnny elaborated:

Physical violence, physical abuse. That was a constant… We were all somewhat shell-shocked. She’d walked[sic] past, you’d shield yourself because you didn’t know what would happen. She could become quite violent, and she was quite violent, and she was quite cruel. There was physical abuse, certainly, which could be in the form of an ash tray being flung at you, or you’d get beat with a high heeled shoe, or a telephone, or whatever’s handy. The verbal abuse, the psychological abuse, was almost worse than the beatings.

Depp also explained that while the physical abuse was bad, the memories of the verbal and emotional abuse stayed much longer. He also said that the treatment from his mother was a lesson on how not to raise his children.

Johnny Depp’s Life Now

He shares two children with his ex, Vanessa Paradis. Lily-Rose, 26, and Jack, 23. The kids have grown up in the entertainment industry, and both have a love for music. While Jack is known mostly as a composer, Lily-Rose has been acting in movies, most recently in Nosferatu.

After being removed as Grindelwald from the film franchise of Fantastic Beasts, Johnny has been sadly offered less roles. He is starting to find his footing again, thankfully, with several upcoming productions. This includes Day Drinker with Penélope Cruz. He and Cruz worked together in the 2001 movie Blow.

Johnny Depp is very much looking forward to working on films again and maintaining the best relationship possible with his kids. He stated:

Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that.
