Scooby-Doo Anime Announced: Go-Go Mystery Machine!

Scooby-Doo, one of the most iconic animated properties worldwide, will finally receive an official anime adaptation. The title will be Go-Go Mystery Machine, and it will take place in Japan, following a new cast of characters. This will undoubtedly be exciting news for both anime lovers and fans of the series.

To many, an anime adaptation of Scooby-Doo is a risky and unorthodox idea, while to others, it comes across as genius. For those who want to know more, here is a breakdown of this exciting news and where it stands within the larger Scooby-Doo franchise.

Scooby-Doo Anime Announced

According to Variety, Warner Bros. announced an anime based on the Scooby-Doo franchise. According to the description, the duo accidentally unleashes a swarm of evil spirits upon the nation and must go across the country to stop them. Additionally, they will be aided by Scooby’s uncle, Daisuke-Doo, and several other original characters. The series was announced alongside several other animated spinoffs, including ones for Adventure Time and Foster’s Home.

Years ago, the idea of Scooby-Doo crossing over with anime gained popularity online with the viral “Ultra-Instinct Shaggy” meme, which made its way into the crossover fighter Multiversus. Furthermore, this wouldn’t be the first time the gang visited Japan, which they did in the underrated 2009 film Scooby-Doo and the Samurai Sword. With all of this, this anime will be a great way to bridge cultures.

Anime Adaptations

Nowadays, many people are tearing into the idea of live-action remakes. From the slew of terrible Hollywood anime adaptations to Disney’s despised live-action ones, the idea seems cursed. However, anime adaptations of live-action or Western properties have fared somewhat better. The animated medium gives creators another level of life and expressiveness to add to their art in ways simply impossible with live-action.

Warner Brothers themselves are no strangers to this. Examples include the upcoming Suicide Squad: Isekai, the forthcoming Rick and Morty adaptation, and the 2006 anime Powerpuff Girls Z. With the inherently zany nature of the Scooby-Doo franchise, they will hopefully adapt to the anime style very well. Furthermore, Warner Bros.’s animation division will oversee this latest production.

Redeeming the Franchise

To many, this will be a chance for the Scooby-Doo franchise to redeem itself after several failures. While the series remains an animation icon, its reputation has waned recently. In 2020, they gave us the animated film Scoob! with mediocre reviews. In 2023, MAX released Velma, a retelling of the series that was universally reviled by critics for derailing the franchise and having nothing to do with the source material.

Since the original series, Scooby-Doo! Where Are You?, the team has been the face of a classic franchise. There were many other beloved series, such as the 2000’s What’s New Scooby-Doo and the much more mature Mystery Incorporated. In between, they also gave us dozens of direct-to-video films along with two lovably campy live-action films. With such an impressive repertoire, Go-Go Mystery Machine will hopefully be another entry into the saga.
