Sacha Baron Cohen will star in Quentin Tarantino’s new West End play The Popinjay Cavalier, premiering March 18, 2027, at the Phoenix Theatre. It is Tarantino’s first play written for stage.
For fans of both men, the casting pairs a filmmaker known for genre-bending scripts with an actor who built his career on bold, often unpredictable characters. Baron Cohen’s move into a Tarantino-written stage production gives theatergoers a chance to see that combination play out live, in a show set in 1830s Europe.
The Role And Production Details
Baron Cohen will headline the cast of The Popinjay Cavalier, though the production has not yet released details on which character he will play. The play is co-produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions, pairing a major Hollywood studio with one of the West End’s most established producers.
Tickets for the run start at £25, the BBC reported.
The Project So Far
The full cast beyond Baron Cohen is expected to be announced at a later date, according to the BBC. Tarantino is both writing and directing the production, a first for the filmmaker, who has built his reputation almost entirely in cinema. The story is set in 1830s Europe, though further plot details have not been released.
Baron Cohen said he is “beyond delighted” to work with Tarantino on the project. In a statement about joining the production, he added, “When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions.”
Tarantino, for his part, said in a statement that he is “keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out.”
