On May 3, Sabrina Carpenter gave second-time Saturday Night Live host Quinta Brunson a surprise when she crashed Brunson’s monologue about being short. They were also joined by Marcello Hernandez and Dwayne White as they sang a hilarious, yet touching, tribute to being short.
Sabrina Carpenter and Quinta Brunson are Both 4′ 11″
Abbot Elementary star and Golden Globe winner Quinta Brunson began the skit by monologuing that she was honored to be hosting Saturday Night Live for the second time, which led into her declaring “I’m proof you can do anything you put your mind to, even if people look down on you – whether it’s because of where you come from, or literally because you’re only 4′ 11″.” After a struggle with an exaggeratedly tall microphone, she launched into a song about how great it is to be short.
Then in the middle of the song, in came Sabrina Carpenter, who happens to be the same height as Quinta Brunson. This led to an explosion of cheers from the audience. Carpenter and Brunson exchanged quips about how for them, shortbread just takes like regular bread and short stories feel like novels.
Other Surprise Guests
As the song went on, Carpenter and Brunson were joined by former Saturday Night Live star Marcello Hernandez, who stated, “I just thought I would come stand next to you because it made me look super-tall.” Indeed, he did look tall next to Carpenter and Brunson. Next came retired NBA star Dwayne Wade, declaring “I’m 6 4″, but in the basketball world that’s like 4 10″ . . . I just really want to be in the song.”
Conclusion
Sabrina Carpenter and Quinta Brunson’s song was full of hilarious lines, such as “I’ve been the same height since kindergarten,” drawing plenty of laughs from the audience. At the same time, watching Carpenter and Brunson comfortably make fun of their height also feels like a celebration of being short. There is something comforting about watching people embrace every aspect of themselves to the point where they can even laugh about it. Comedy helps us to look at ourselves in new ways, and as the song so aptly puts it, “life is just more fun when you’re fun-sized.”
