Ryan Phillippe is looking back on the 2006 Oscars night when he and then-wife Reese Witherspoon both walked away with major wins, calling it a “wild night” during an appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026.
Phillippe, 52, known for 9-1-1: Nashville, described the evening as one where his film Crash took home Best Picture just moments after Witherspoon, 50, won Best Actress for Walk the Line.
What Phillippe Said About The Ryan Phillippe 2006 Oscars Night
“It was a wild night altogether because my wife at the time, Reese Witherspoon, also won Best Actress,” Phillippe said. “While she was backstage giving her post-award interviews, they called Best Picture for Crash.”
The timing meant Phillippe took the stage for his film’s biggest honor while Witherspoon was still occupied with press duties following her own win, according to Just Jared.
Phillippe also recounted meeting Morgan Freeman for the first time that night, since Freeman presented the Best Picture award. He said he got starstruck in the middle of the ceremony.
“Morgan Freeman was the presenter of the Best Picture and I had never met Morgan Freeman so I fanned out on stage at the Oscars,” Phillippe said. “I’m like, ‘I’ve always wanted to meet you, sir,’ and this is while the producer is accepting the award. Kind of a funny moment.”
What The Celebration Looked Like
Phillippe said the pair kept the night going well past the ceremony itself. “We had such a fun after-party,” he said. “Up until probably 5 or 6 in the morning.”
He described the overall experience as something close to out-of-body, given how quickly the two wins landed back-to-back for the couple.
Background On Phillippe And Witherspoon’s Relationship
Phillippe and Witherspoon were married from 1999 to 2008. They share two children, daughter Ava, 27, and son Deacon, 22.
Although their marriage ended nearly two decades ago, the two have remained close as co-parents, according to Just Jared.
Phillippe’s comments mark a rare public moment of him speaking at length about his former marriage, reflecting on a night that doubled as a career highlight for both actors.
