Ryan Coogler Clarifies Popular Sinners 2

5 Ryan Coogler Movies to watch

In a surprising turn of events, Ryan Coogler has pulled back a bit on previous comments on not pursuing a sequel to his latest hit film, Sinners. The movie hit the ground running at the box office, blending elements of the supernatural and horror. Sinners has become one of the biggest films in 2025 and set many records while hitting major milestones along the way. The film’s strong success understandably had fans curious and pushing for a sequel to Ryan Coogler’s horror flick.

The director had previously made it known that he intended the movie to be a “full course meal.” In an April interview with Ebony Magazine, Coogler had put the idea of a sequel in the coffin at the time. He said, “I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me, and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.”

He also added, “I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees, and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.” Coogler set out to make Sinners as a singular experience, as unique as its own film. However, he changed his tune a bit when asked by The Hollywood Reporter about possibly doing more in the world of Sinners.

Coogler said, “It’s tough to say now. It was always intended to be a full meal of a movie. You never want to close the doors on anything, but it was actually a break from franchise filmmaking for me. So I wanted to make something that was complete and let audiences take it.” Although Coogler might have walked back his previous comments somewhat, he reiterated his intention to make Sinners his own film.

Only time will tell, but as of now, it looks like there won’t be any moves for the Sinners in the immediate future. However, fans will keep their fingers crossed for another follow-up film. While not explicitly confirming or denying the possibility of a Sinners sequel, he sounded pretty firm on his intention of making the film a “full meal of a movie.” The film was highly personal for Ryan Coogler, and it showed in the deal he struck with Warner Bros. Pictures, which will result in the film’s rights reverting to him in 25 years.

Final Thoughts on Ryan Coogler

While Coogler doesn’t seem interested in a Sinners franchise, there is one that will likely return in the future. MCU’s 2018 film, Black Panther, showcased the director’s talents to many. The film was a successful and cultural hit, grossing over $1.3 billion, and Coogler returned to direct the 2022 sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Ryan Coogler is sure to return for Black Panther 3, and in fantastic news, veteran actor Denzel Washington will star in the movie.
