In Hollywood, there have been many collaborations between iconic directors and actors. One that comes to mind is Robert De Niro and the 10-feature collaboration with Martin Scorsese. Another is Owen Wilson and his 7 string of films with the eccentric Wes Anderson. A burgeoning actor-director relationship developed impressively well over the past few years is Michael B. Jordan and his work with the Black Panther, Fruitvale Station filmmaker Ryan Coogler. The two are working together again on a supernatural thriller, Sinners, set for a March 2025 release.
Sinners Transports Viewers to 1930s New Orleans
On September 24, 2024, Warner Brothers dropped the official teaser trailer for Sinners on their YouTube channel. The trailer opens with a terrified Michael B. Jordan strapping up like he’s ready to go to war. His voiceover reveals that a supernatural presence has invaded his character’s hometown, named Smoke. Smoke doesn’t seem to be the only one on edge in town, as many townspeople are seen to be filled with fear.
Judging from the costume design in the 2-minute teaser and a report from Esquire, Smoke and the New Orleans townspeople live in the 1930s when Jim Crow laws were still in effect. The laws, for those unaware, enforced racial segregation between African Americans and white people in public locations, including parks, libraries, drinking fountains, restrooms, buses, trains, and restaurants. Early reports from Entertainment Weekly have also revealed that the creatures they will be going up against will be vampires.
The Eclectic Cast and Crew of Sinners
Michael B. Jordan will pull double duty in the 2025 supernatural thriller, playing Smoke and his soon-to-be-named twin brother. Joining Jordan is an immaculate cast with strong acting chops, including Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods, UnPrisoned), Wunmi Mosaku (Loki, Lovecraft Country), Jack O’Connell (Back to Black, Starred Up), Academy Award nominee Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, Hawkeye) and Omar Benson Miller (Ballers, True Lies). Ryan Coogler also performs double duty behind the camera as he writes and directs Sinners.
Coogler reunited with his longtime producing partner and Proximity Media cofounder Seb Ohanian for the 2025 feature. Speaking of reunions, the now two-time Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, who met Coogler while both college students at the University of Southern California (USC), will work with Ryan Coogler again to make Sinners‘ score.
Sinners’ Possible Themes
At the time of this post, not much is fully known about Sinners’ story other than the fact that it takes place during the ’30s in the Jim Crow South, and a possibly vampiric presence has invaded Smoke’s town of New Orleans. From Ryan Coogler’s past work that touches on social issues in America and worldwide, it feels safe to say that the supernatural themes will serve as an allegory for racial tension in the United States during this time.
It could divide the white folk from the black folk even further or bring them closer together as I would imagine they would realize they both have common enemies out to kill them. At any rate, that’s just an educated guess.
Final Thoughts
It is incredible news to know Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan are teaming up again for a new feature film. According to the Numbers, Ryan Coogler typically loves to ground his stories in realism, even in his Black Panther films that have grossed over $2 billion worldwide. To see him dabbling into supernatural territory is shocking but the numbers prove he has garnered an audience that will flock to the theaters and see what he works on. We are all psyched to see how this film will turn out.
