The one-time teenage heartthrob turned acting powerhouse Robert Pattinson has turned his career around over the past couple of years. Since starring in young adult films like the Twilight franchise and Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire, the UK actor has since expanded to playing roles in independent and blockbuster features like The Lighthouse and The Batman. He’s now set to star in Bong Joon Ho’s follow-up feature to his Oscar-winning thriller Parasite, entitled Mickey 17.
Robert Pattinson Lives And Dies In Mickey 17
The film Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, an apathetic man who unwittingly signs up to be an “expendable” for top-secret space programs far from Earth. As he gets his entire body scanned, the purpose for his involvement is revealed. If at any point Mickey dies while in the middle of one of his assigned missions, the team will simply clone Mickey and use that clone to take his place. The story starts to move into trippy, complicated territory when two clones come across one another.
The movie Mickey 17 is based on the science fiction novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. According to an interview he had with Nerdist back in February 2022, Ashton developed the early ideas of the story from a philosophical quandary called the teletransport paradox. The paradox ponders if, in the far future, teleportation travel has been perfected and you were to get all of your body scanned, then temporarily destroyed, and rebuilt as you were, and then sent your body from point A to point B, would that body now at point B still be you?
The Star-Studded Cast Of Mickey 17

The talented cast joining Robert Pattinson includes Academy Award nominees Steven Yeun (Minari, The Walking Dead) as Berto and scream queen Toni Collette (Hereditary, Knives Out) as Gwen Johansen. Blink Twice and Whitney Houston biopic star Naomi Ackie and Mark Ruffalo round out the cast as Nasha Adjaya and Hieronymous Marshall, respectively. Ruffalo’s Marshall views the clones, dubbed multiples, as a scourge to kill off; he can be seen standing before a large crowd and declaring, “In the case of multiples, we exterminate every individual.”
The Potential Themes Of Mickey 17
The visuals of Mickey 17 feature a mixture of bleak dystopia and snowy atmosphere that feels similar to Joon Ho’s 2013 post-apocalyptic film Snowpiercer. Also adapted from a novel, this thriller contained many themes of classism, income inequality, and social revolution, similar to much of the director’s work over the years.
It seems that Mickey 17 will likely be another of his films that use the protagonist’s adventures as social commentary on how society and those in charge treat lower-class individuals, such as abusing their power to mold them into what they want to be. Audiences in Bong Joon Ho’s homeland of South Korea will be able to see the film in theaters on January 28, 2025, though the rest of the world will have to wait until January 31 for the wide release.
Final Thoughts
Robert Pattinson has been able to redefine his career within the past two decades to play a wide range of unique characters in subtle independent work and intriguing character studies. The UK actor has proven to be a true acting talent, and audiences will look forward to what he brings to this film. Snowpiercer and Parasite are two of Bong Joon Ho’s films I’ve seen before Mickey 17 and it’s evident he knows how to create an immersive, captivating narrative that has a strong message.
