\”Rings of Power\” Orcs Spark Controversy Amongst Season 2 Release

The Lord of the Rings TV show adaptation Rings of Power is currently in its second season. As this season’s episodes roll out to viewers, people are starting to notice some issues regarding the series’ content, specifically when it comes to the origin of orcs. Many fans believe that the showrunners are not honoring J.R.R. Tolkien’s vision and are making horrible mistakes in their interpretation of orcs. Here’s everything you need to know about Rings of Power Season 2 and the drama it has stirred up online.

Amazon Studios created the streaming TV show Rings of Power with a hefty $1 billion budget and first released the series on September 1, 2023. After its release, Amazon came forward and stated that Rings of Power was the most-watched show on Amazon Prime Video. 37% of the audience watched the entire show at its completion.

Jeff Bezos has said that Rings of Power is more than a piece of content meant to turn a profit; it’s something deep within the creators’ hearts that they genuinely want to make great. So with a billion dollars and their intentions in the right place, why is the show amidst controversy as Season 2 rolls out to fans?

Fan Reactions

Fans have taken to Twitter to voice their disappointment in the series’ faithfulness, or lack thereof, to Tolkien’s original works. Tolkien enthusiasts have publicly scrutinized and criticized how the Rings of Power series has depicted the race of Orcs, but not in a way you might expect. In The Lord of the Rings books, Tolkien created the Orcs to be an embodiment of evil, even to the point of having absolutely no redeeming qualities about them (although Tolkien himself struggled with some of the implications of this depiction). In contrast, the Rings of Power has been accused of directly contradicting Tolkien’s original vision for the books‘ villains by humanizing the Orc race and justifying their actions.

Some fans have accused the show of going “woke” over its depiction of Orcs. One Twitter user, Rock Solid, voiced their frustration at the show creators’ decisions by saying, “Tolkien specifically wrote the orcs to be irredeemably evil; they are born from evil to serve evil. Trying to make them out to be a marginalized group is beyond stupid. This is like spitting on Tolkien’s writing and legacy.” This quote encapsulates the feelings of the other 18.2 thousand posts currently trending on Twitter about this topic. Fans are saddened and frustrated by Amazon Studios’ decision and expect better from the massive film studio. Tolkien’s legacy deserves better, and so does the fandom that keeps it alive.

Final Thoughts

With the very large budget and creative talent it has at its disposal, Amazon Studios has no excuse but to deliver the best possible installment for Lord of the Rings. Fans’ reactions fans as season two of Rings of Power hits Prime Video has been very controversial. Audience members demand for Tolkien’s legacy to be respected and for the orcs to be evil for evil’s sake as the author intended them to be. Book adaptations have always been a risky challenge in the film and TV industry, since filmmakers and showrunners have to balance fan service with budget and executive expectations. Viewers are hoping that the rest of the season makes up for the mistakes made in the first three episodes.
