Rick and Morty 8×07 Explores Modern Franchise Fans

Rick and Morty

The adult animated show Rick and Morty is notable for its action-packed and wacky adventures. But every so often, it throws a curveball by having a sober episode. Or it’ll showcase something that reflects an aspect found in our world. This week’s brand-new installment is of the latter, with the titular duo making a movie. Things soon go awry when they’re sucked into the story and must finish it. But would it surprise you that their anger reflects what real-life fans sometimes feel?

Disappointed with the new Maximum Velocitree movie, Rick and Morty confronts the director, James Gunn. They then take the script for the next film to help fix the franchise. Rick soon builds a machine called the Movie-lizer to help them easily edit the screenplay. Everything goes well until the device malfunctions, sucking the duo into the flick. Now, they must finish the movie from the inside out to return home. And things only get worse when Gunn arrives to steal the Movie-Lizer for himself.

A Reflection of Franchises and Fans

This newest Rick and Morty installment presents the relationship between film franchises and their fans. More precisely, it showcases how fanatics feel when their favorite movie series becomes lackluster. They blame the director(s) and/or think they can do better than the professionals. The titular duo performs both actions, but eventually understands that filmmaking isn’t easy. Hopefully, real-world fans learn this as well and cut professional filmmakers some slack. They may be artists yet they’re still humans trying their best.

On a small side note, James Gunn’s inclusion likely correlates with the upcoming Superman movie. The episode even mentioned the film during the conversation between him and Zack Snyder. Gunn’s inclusion was likely a simple last-minute cross-promotion before the flick premieres this Friday. Likely to generate more interest and get more butts into the seats.

Final Verdict and Thoughts

I give this interesting episode of Rick and Morty a solid 8! It was a traditional action-packed adventure with some insight into fandoms and fans. Also, it was nice that Jerry got a win and helped the duo achieve success. I was especially impressed that the showrunners got the actual James Gunn to voice himself. It certainly adds a little something when prominent celebrities portray themselves on any show. Overall, it was another good Season 8 episode, and I’ll be waiting for the next.
