“Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” returned to theaters to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The Force was strong with this re-release. Fans spent their dollars to show their love for the film and the franchise, and the box office numbers show it.
Revenge of the Sith Earnings
The rerelease of the film brought in over $50 million worldwide. That included over $30 million right here in domestic theaters. That made it the number two movie for the weekend. And, with these earnings, it has now earned over $900 million worldwide, with over $400 million of that being domestic earnings. It’s catching up to “Episode I: The Phantom Menace,” which has already passed $1 billion.
The film, which debuted in 2005, was the last of the prequel trilogy, which received some criticism from fans of the original trilogy. The movies did better with kids who didn’t have that deep connection to the originals. It’s one of the best rereleases for the “Star Wars” franchise. Disney reported that “Episode IV: A New Hope” earned $36 million when it was rereleased in 1997, and “Episode I: The Phantom Menace” earned $14.5 million during its 25th anniversary rerelease.
Continued Success for the Stars
Since the release of “Revenge of the Sith,” both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen have continued to make appearances in “Star Wars” projects. In the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series on Disney+, both of them reprised their roles as Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. The Disney+ series, “Ahsoka,” also includes the Sith lord Darth Vader, played by Christensen.
Anakin Skywalker actor has also been making public appearances, much to the delight of fans. Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson were there for a screening of “Revenge of the Sith” in Hollywood. And, at “Star Wars” Celebration in Japan, he revealed that he would be back for Season Two of “Ahsoka.”
“Star Wars” Doesn’t End
There’s more coming for fans of the franchise. “Star Wars: The Last Starfighter” will be coming to theaters in 2027 and stars Ryan Gosling. That’s not to mention “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” which is coming in 2026.
If you can’t wait, head to Disney+ for the latest season of “Andor” as well as all the classics and series. And “Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld,” an animated series, made its debut on May 4 for the much-celebrated May the Fourth (Be With You) holiday.
