Netflix Drops Release Date Teaser for “Avatar: The Last Airbender” Season 2
The much-anticipated second season of Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” live-action adaptation finally gets a release date! The studio dropped a short video teasing the new season and finally gave fans a date to put on their calendars: June 25.
The “Avatar: The Last Airbender” Season Two Announcement Video
The short, approximately 1-minute teaser accompanying the announcement is sure to get fans of the show talking. We get a glimpse of the Earth Kingdom capital, Ba Sing Se, which has been constructed using practical sets, giving the world a real and grounded feel. Perfect for the Earth Kingdom!
The actors appear, expressing their excitement for the new season, and we get a glimpse of a decidedly older-looking Gordon Cormier, who plays the titular Last Airbender, raising the question of whether the show will address the passage of time in a unique way, given that the actors’ aging wasn’t a worry in the animated series.
We also get a look at actress Miya Cech as fan favorite Earthbender Toph, Dallas Liu’s Prince Zuko’s new haircut, and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the bending in action.
A Story of Two Adaptations
The original “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is considered by many to be as close to a perfect show as you can reasonably get. Sitting at number 7 on IMDb’s all-time shows list, the animated show released over two decades ago has shaped a generation of viewers and proven that television aimed at kids can be just as intricate and affecting as its adult-oriented counterparts.
The animated series was first adapted into a film directed by M. Night Shyamalan in 2010. The film was… not well received, to put it mildly. Many fans considered it a blight on the show they love, and the film frequently finds itself in “worst movie of all time” conversations, rightly so. To take a beloved show like “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and completely misrepresent it with tone-deaf casting, subpar special effects, and a complete lack of basic understanding of the source material probably ruined a few kids’ summer in 2010. It certainly ruined mine.
Enter Netflix with a brand new take, new cast, and, at the very least, a commitment to representing the source material as well as possible in a live-action format. Now, not every popular animated property needs a live-action adaptation, but if you’re going to do one, capturing the essence of what made the animated version popular in the first place should be the top priority, and it seems like Netflix is getting it somewhat right.
Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is far from perfect, though. There are several things fans found disagreeable in the adaptation, from Bumi to Yue’s wig; there are certainly things to complain about, but overall, the show’s heart seems to be in the right place.
What to Expect in Season Two

Season 2, or rather book 2, of the animated series is considered by most to be a major upgrade from book one, infusing new characters, deepening storylines, and addressing harsher topics. Hopefully, the live-action show will follow in its footsteps and level up from season one.
Expect a lot of Earthbending, a lot of Ba Sing Se, and an “Empire Strikes Back” style ending if they stick to the source material. Fans look forward to seeing Toph in action and a more generous helping of Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee, AKA Ozai’s Angels. Here’s to hoping Netflix stays the course and handles what could be a truly electric season of television gracefully.
