Reagan, 2024 Biopic Dominates, Astounding Box Office Expectations

Reagan Premiere in Hollywood, California

Reagan, Dennis Quaid’s newest movie biopic, tells the true story of President Ronald Reagan’s life. The film explores his boyhood through his later years as an adult. Penelope Ann Miller starred alongside Quaid as Nancy Reagan, and the movie scored a 98% total on Rotten Tomatoes. However, critics have been divided on the film since it saw a low 17% Tomatometer score. The movie was released on August 30. Although critics have given the film negative reviews, it has dominated expectations at the box office. Actor Jon Voight, who plays a fictional retired KGB officer who holds him responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union, provides most of the narration.

Reagan Defies Box Office Expectations

Reagan Movie Premiere

The movie took down $2.6 million upon its release and preview screenings from over 2,000 locations. On the film’s opening weekend, the movie grossed an estimated $10 million. The biopic outperformed the projections of its box office performance, which was to make $5 million in its opening performance.

The film grossed $26.7 million in its fourth week, crossing the $25 million milestone thanks to a $1.9 million boost over the weekend. Although the movie took a $33 million drop from last week, the film still maintained a respectable draw for week 4. Even with Marvel Studios’ Deadpool and Wolverine smashing the box office throughout the summer, it held its own at the box office. The movie is loosely inspired by Paul Kengor’s 2006 book The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism

Reagan Box Office Milestone

Despite surpassing expectations in its opening week, it could face the reckoning of an enormous budget. The movie has a limited audience since there is still some controversy surrounding Reagan. The story means that there is little draw for international audiences. Due to that factor, the limited audience won’t help Reagan accomplish its commercial potential. Earning back a movie’s budget is important, but it is not a guaranteed recipe for success. When factoring in marketing costs and required cuts that theatres need, a film needs to generally make twice the overall budget for profit. So, the movie will need to see at least $50-60 million to see a successful profit.

The film will rely on its domestic numbers, which is smart considering the movie is centered on an American audience. The movie can even break ground with streaming, increasing its chances of reaching the American audience, particularly conservative-leaning American viewers. Critics have been hard on the movie despite its good standing with the audience score. The main criticism was that the characters were not compelling to engage audiences. The whole point of a biopic is to make the main figure compelling enough to help the narrative, but critics didn’t feel the film did that well. Despite that negative criticism, audiences were drawn to the film’s journey, which they saw as inspirational, heartwarming, and true to history. Reagan is currently playing in theatres.
