Warning: this article contains minor spoilers for the film Moana.
Disney Pixar’s animated film Moana came out in 2016 and captured the hearts of parents and kids alike around the globe. As Pixar’s first movie about a princess of color, Moana set expectations for the film company that didn’t disappoint. In fact, it did just the opposite – Moana grossed almost 700 million dollars worldwide. Now, in 2024, the new teaser trailer for the sequel, Moana 2, has been released. Let’s revisit the original movie and talk about the sequel trailer together.
The Original Moana

The movie Moana follows a princess, the daughter of the chief of the island, Motunui. Her duty is to her people and her island. But since she was a toddler, she’s been drawn to the ocean. She loves to swim and splash and play – against her parents’ wishes. Her parents and elders are under the belief that the ocean is dangerous. And it is. It’s under a curse. When Moana discovers that the ocean has chosen her to cure the curse and restore her dying island to its former glory, she sets off on a dangerous adventure to do just that.
Together with a sassy, tiny bit conceited demi-god named Maui – voiced by none other than Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson – and her pet chicken Hei Hei, Moana captures hearts and (spoiler alert) saves her island! In the process, she discovers that her ancestors didn’t just dwell on one island but were, in fact, voyagers of the ocean.

The Moana 2 trailer opens with the familiar rhymical chanting and drums that were such a staple of the original movie and pans over Moana as she stands in the ocean, blowing a conch shell horn to her people. We see her beating drums in the cavern where the old boats are kept, and then she’s found preparing to set sail back into the ocean. “This is a call from the ancestors,” she says in the trailer. Just when you think she’s on her way, Maui shows up and jokes about eating her pet chicken and pig as a snack. Typical Maui.
Reprising their roles in this sequel are Dwayne the Rock Johnson, Auli’i Cravalho, and yes, even the voice of Hei Hei – Alan Tudyk. Unfortunately, Lin Manuel Miranda did not return as composer for the sequel, but Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i did an amazing job from what we’ve heard already.
It looks like Moana is going on another adventure across the sea! I don’t know about you but between the music and the animation, I am so excited to see what Moana 2 has in store. I hope that you’re excited, too! You can watch this movie in theatres on November 27th, 2024.
