R. Kelly is back in the news again… but not for the reason you may think. He was recently rushed to the hospital after overdosing while in jail. While he did survive and is back in jail, his lawyers are accusing the overdose of being an assassination attempt or an inside job murder for hire situation. There are still a lot of details unfolding in the case as his lawyers are attempting to get him out of jail for his safety.

R. Kelly Hospitalized

R&B singer R. Kelly is back in the news again, but this time for surviving an overdose while in prison. He’s currently serving a 30-year sentence in a North Carolina prison for a number of charges, racketeering and sex trafficking are just a few of many.

R. Kelly was taken to Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, after a lethal level of his medication was given to him by prison officials, according to The Hollywood Reporter. His attorney, Beau Brindley, filed court documents on Tuesday, saying Kelly woke up on June 13 with black spots in his vision, and he wasn’t able to get up. After crawling to the door of his cell, he lost consciousness.

The documents filed by his attorneys allege that the staff at the prison were the ones who gave R. Kelly a lethal amount of the medication. Brindley said, “Bureau of Prisons officials administered an amount of medication that significantly exceeded a safe dose and caused Mr. Kelly to overdose, putting his life in jeopardy.”

Kelly was in the hospital for two days before he returned to prison and was placed in solitary confinement.

Attempted Murder?

Both R. Kelly and his attorney are alleging that this whole situation was an attempted assassination of Kelly. In a statement, Brindley said, “Federal officers have solicited the murder of R. Kelly because he intends to expose the corruption underlying his federal prosecutions. We have filed our motion to make sure that they fail.”

This is not the first time that Kelly and his lawyers have spoken out about him not being safe in jail, and the fact that he was being put in solitary confinement.

According to PEOPLE, he has been in solitary confinement since his attorney filed an emergency motion seeking a temporary furlough on June 10. He claimed back then that officials in the Bureau of Prisons were plotting to kill R. Kelly, and he should be placed under house arrest, as it is not safe for him in prison.

Additionally, there was also a filing from an inmate, Mikeal Glenn Stine, that alleged he was asked to kill R. Kelly by prison officials. He claimed officials asked him to do it before he was set to move to another prison. However, he told Kelly about the plot instead of carrying it out.

The Bureau of Prisons claimed that keeping Kelly in solitary confinement was the best way to keep him safe. While there is no date for a hearing about the emergency motion filed, Kelly and his attorney are fighting to get him out of there, even asking President Donald Trump to pardon him.

There are still a lot of moving parts and accusations in the situation, but for now, R. Kelly remains in prison while everything is being figured out legally.
