Prince Harry has discussed his emotional bond with members of the royal family many times. One event that profoundly affected him was the wedding of his brother, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, to Kate Middleton in 2011. While the world rejoiced for the marriage between the now Prince and Princess of Wales, Price Harry described the mixed emotions that he experienced then, saying farewell to his boyhood friendship he shared with his brother.
The Wedding And Its Impact On Prince Harry
Prince William and Kate Middleton were married in a grand ceremony at Westminster Abbey in April 2011, in front of a global audience and a congregation of esteemed guests. Although he participated as his brother’s best man, Prince Harry said he felt left out during the joyous occasion. In his memoir Spare, Harry described the wedding as “yet another farewell under this horrid roof” and “another sundering.”
He wrote how William’s marriage to Kate Middleton transformed his relationship with his brother, saying that “the brother I’d escorted into Westminster Abbey that morning was gone — forever.” Lamenting that they’d “never again ride together across the Lesotho countryside” or “share a horsey-smelling cottage while learning to fly,” he said that life separated them.
As William and Kate walked back up the aisle as husband and wife, Harry recalled his final thought for his brother: “Goodbye.” Containing a great deal of sorrow, these words severed the relation of brotherhood between Prince William and Prince Harry and signified the start of a new phase in William’s life.
Strained Relations Between The Brothers
The royal brothers have been known to have had a frosty relationship ever since Harry and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, opted to take a step back from royal duties in 2020. Prince Harry also described a heated row between the two brothers in 2019. He said that towards the end of the conversation when they were arguing about Meghan, William physically assaulted him by shoving him to the floor. This physical altercation pulled apart the relationship between the two, which had already been on shaky ground for years.
A Glimpse Of Unity At A Recent Funeral
Although the two brothers’ relationship was not on good terms following that altercation, they finally came face-to-face again at the funeral of their maternal uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, in late August 2023, which took place at St. Mary’s Church in Snettisham, Norfolk, England. Although it was rare to see both brothers together in public, the event is said to have helped repair the rift between them. While the brothers will have to carry on with their tumultuous brotherhood, Prince Harry’s words provide one insight into the personal emotions such as anger and treachery he felt and the personal factors that have ripped the two siblings apart.
