June is a month of acknowledgement for the LGBTQIA+ community where those who identify under the queer or trans umbrellas can celebrate their identities and the community that embraces them with no hesitation. One of my favorite ways to celebrate Pride month is to read books about LGBT characters and by LGBT authors. Today I’m bringing you a list of 3 great young adult books to read during pride month, this June 2024.

To kick off this list, we’ve got Heartstopper by Alice Oseman (she/they). Alice writes beautiful books about people who identify under various aspects of the queer and trans umbrellas, from ace-spec to trans characters. Their book are heartfelt, funny, and all-inclusive.
Heartstopper is a graphic novel series (that is now also a Netflix Original tv show) which follows Charlie and Nick, two boys at an all-boys school in England, who think they couldn’t be more opposite but learn they have more in common with each other than they think. Follow Nick and Charlie as they explore their identities, their relationship, and their mental health together with the support of their friends.

The Poisons We Drink by Bethany Baptiste (she/her) is a young adult queer urban fantasy about a girl named Venus who brews and sells illegal love potions to support her family. When her mother is killed by an enemy, raising and keeping her little sister becomes Venus’s responsibility. An opportunity to get justice for her mother arises, but she must poison people to do so. Venus finds herself grappling with right and wrong, justice and revenge, and the all too frustrating responsibilities that come with growing up.
The Poisons We Drink is a fast paced, powerful read that dives into themes such as queer identity and systemic racism through a unique magic system that will pull you in immediately.

Skater Boy by Anthony Nerada (he/him) is a queer, pop punk inspired YA novel about “what it’s like to be gay in a world where you don’t fit in”. Wesley is a skater boy who loves photography and wants nothing to do with ballet. Until he sees The Nutcracker with his mom and realizes he might just be in love with the guy who plays the nutcracker. There’s a few problems though – he’s in the closet, and ballet doesn’t come with the same reputation as being a skater.
Skater Boy is about shattering the status quo and accepting self-identity while ignoring the negativity that comes with doing so. It will break your heart, make you laugh, and you’ll wish it didn’t have an ending.
So there you have it. Lovers of graphic novels, fantasy, and contemporary romance novels, these books are perfect for you. Or, if you’re looking to try something new, these are 3 wonderfully queer, wonderfully inclusive, young adult novels to read in June 2024 for pride month. I hope that you enjoy them!
