Many DC Comics fans know of the famous Supergirl, the Girl of Steel. Her real name is Kara Zor-El, but she doesn’t always take on the Supergirl mantle. She goes by the moniker of Power Girl in some realities across the DC multiverse. Nevertheless, she’s still a mighty hero and has faced countless dastardly foes. Her new comic book features her taking on three more called the Void Three. With their powers over Nature, what challenges could they present for this iconic heroine?
Meet the Girl of Steel
Everyone knows Superman hails from the planet Krypton, but there’s another: Kara Zor-El, the Supergirl. As the Man of Steel’s older cousin, she possesses powers similar to his. Kara is also a celebrated member of the Teen Titans and Justice League. But she doesn’t always take up the mantle of Supergirl in particular universes. One of the most renowned iterations is Power Girl from the alternate Earth-Two dimension. She’s the same character except more powerful, wiser, older, and works independently from her cousin.
Power Girl arrived in All-Star Comics #58 as part of Earth-Two’s Justice Society of America. After that, she starred in over 1700 comic books throughout DC Comics’ prestigious run. Her numerous exploits include joining Justice League Europe and founding Infinity, Inc. She also has a comic series starring her having hilarious misadventures with Harley Quinn. Power Girl’s popularity even caused her to become an unintentional sex symbol in the 2000s. Nevertheless, she’s still a powerful hero who protects the innocent and humanity.
Recapping Power Girl #16
Like many heroes of DC Comics, Power Girl received her own comic book series. She already has two volumes completed, and there’s a third in progress now. This new saga depicts Kara coming to terms with her new powers. It also showcases her challenges concerning her emotions, identity, and relationship with the Superman Family. She decides to find her place in the world as a scientist named Paige Stetler. At the same time, Kara struggles to prove herself a hero amongst her peers.
This choice has led to her making new friends and fearsome enemies. The most recent foe is Ejecta, who appeared in Power Girl #16. She and Power Girl engage in a climactic battle that takes them to the Arctic. It ends with Kara victorious and Ejecta returning to her original dimension. While this happens, Power Girl’s friend Omen recovers in the hospital from a brutal assault. Omen is eventually released, and the team wants to remodel a building into something new.
Issue #17 Introduces the Void Three
New foes arise to challenge the Kryptonian hero in Power Girl #17. They are a trio of elemental beings and siblings called the Void Three. Sprig, the acting leader, manipulates plants similar to the characters Poison Ivy and Floronic Man. Alongside him is his sister, the team’s only female member, the water controller Aquus. Last is their brother, Bruin, whose element and corresponding powers are unknown. A future issue should reveal them, though given his name, they might involve fire.
Power Girl #17 primarily featured Sprig using his plants to break Aquus from prison. Afterward, they venture forth to reunite with Bruin and complete their trifecta. Their goal is to return the Earth to the days before technology outcompeted Nature. They want to revert the world to a more natural state. Their grudge against Power Girl involves her new home being an affront to their values. It’s an odd reason for a rivalry, but their eventual battle should be entertaining.
Final Thoughts
Power Girl #17 sounds like a super exciting and intriguing comic book! The Void Three captured my attention since they’re mystical eco-terrorists. I’ve seen characters like them, and DC Comics already has similar individuals. However, the Void Three has an interesting twist to them, bringing something unique. Their elemental powers should present quite the challenge for Power Girl despite being a Kryptonian. Power Girl #17 is out now, so get a copy today and follow the story!
