Get Ready to Play
If you like EDM, pop, or rock music, you may have heard of Porter Robinson’s new album, SMILE! 😀. Released in July 2024, the album was a brand new energy for the artist that has been well-received by fans. Alongside the new album, of course, is a new tour. In the theme of SMILE! 😀‘s carefree attitude, the concert showcases a colorful concoction of props, lights, and sounds. The set was adorned with a giant pink billboard, displaying the show’s digital visuals in front of a larger screen, creating the illusion of a grand city. Confetti cannons lined the front of the stage, ready to unleash that carnival magic at precisely the right moment.
The props on stage were over the top with the album’s chaotic energy, including a giant inflatable cat, a blue solo cup big enough to be a chair, and glowing orbs that played music when struck. Amongst the visual playground on the stage was a full band consisting of a drummer, guitarist, bassist, and keyboardist to back Robinson up. Throughout the show, each band member showcases their talent in some capacity. The band’s bassist, Margot, was featured as a lead vocalist in several numbers, and guitarist Rafa ripped out a guitar solo for the ages. The full band took the typical Porter Robinson show to the next level.
A Journey Through the Eras
Robinson blessed the audience that night with every single song on SMILE! 😀 in nearly one fell swoop, save for one, which we’ll return to. The SMILE! 😀 section of the concert was incredible, but what we were treated to next was equally captivating. The second and third sections of the show were dedicated to Robinson’s past albums, Nurture and Worlds. Each album was given a bite-sized revival of its previous stage show.
This was a wonderful surprise for newer fans, as it offered the chance to hear the previous albums live most authentically. Robinson also performed the ‘lost’ song from Worlds that he revived for the album’s 10th anniversary, “Hollowheart,” with Margot taking the place of Amy Millan on vocals.
For the show’s encore, fans were treated to the classic “Shelter” that Robinson composed alongside another well-known EDM artist, Madeon. This version of “Shelter” was unique, as it utilized the full band and extravagant lights and props to create an immersive recreation of the song’s music video. “Shelter” was the final song.
Remember the song he didn’t play during the SMILE! 😀 section of the show? That song was “Cheerleader,” the album’s featured single. After briefly leaving the stage, Robinson donned his iconic black and red wings, giving everyone one last fanfare for the ages. He even opened a mosh pit to the song! Wild!

If you take the time to see this show, you’ll be treated to the musical equivalent of an amusement park. The performance Porter Robinson and his band gave was well over 110%. It’s easy to tell that each person on that stage is there for everyone who bought a ticket. The show is thoughtfully crafted, emotional, and tons of fun.
