Everyone knows the kooky and silly collection of characters called the Looney Tunes. The roster includes famous names like Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Wile E. Coyote, and Tweety. It also contains the lovable and memorable faces of Porky Pig and Daffy Duck.
These two have entertained audiences with their antics and adventures for decades. And they’re about to do it again in their brand-new theatrical animated movie, The Day The Earth Blew Up. What can we expect to see in this film filled with gags and jokes?
Meet Porky Pig and Daffy Duck
Porky Pig debuted the 1930 Merrie Melodies animated short, I Haven’t Got a Hat. He starred as a stuttering schoolboy taking part in a class recital. Joe Dougherty, who stuttered in real life, provided this character’s unique speech pattern. Either way, people adored Porky, and he continued appearing in more animated shorts. He’d even become the first Looney Tunes character to have a cartoon named after them. This particular short also introduced another iconic animated star, Daffy Duck.
Created by Tex Avery, Daffy’s first appearance was in 1937’s Porky’s Duck Hunt. He portrays the stuttering pig’s prey, though he is assertive, unrestrained, and combative. The unhinged waterfowl would star in further cartoons, including war-time shorts. Daffy eventually changed into Bugs Bunny’s rival following the rabbit’s rise to fame. He became a foil for the ‘wascally wabbit’ in countless animated shorts. However, he co-starred with Porky the most in many animated short films and series.
A Brand-New Looney Tunes Adventure
Porky Pig and Daffy Duck return in The Day The Earth Blew Up. In this science-fiction film, these lifelong friends are called upon to save the planet. An alien invader plans to use a gum factory to control everyone’s minds. Two scientists, including Petunia Pig, join the silly pair on its mission. At the same time, Porky and Daffy must save their crumbling farmhouse. The homeowner’s association deemed it suitable due to a massive hole in the roof.
Renowned voice actor Eric Bauza plays the temperamental straight-man Porky and wacky Daffy. Candi Milo will play Petunia Pig, a lesser-known Looney Tunes character and Porky’s love interest. The alien antagonist, The Invader, shall be voiced by Peter MacNicol. Pete Browngardt, who’s handled Looney Tunes shorts on MAX, takes the director role. Browngardt has developed, created, produced, and directed 200 MAX Looney Tunes Cartoons segments. He was also the one to pitch the idea for this fully animated film.
Final Thoughts
After seeing the trailers and exclusive clip, The Day The Earth Blew Up looks incredible. It appears to contain the classic Looney Tunes slapstick comedy I grew up with. Plus, I’m intrigued with how only Porky and Daffy will star in it. We’re not getting the more famous characters, but that’s okay. It means we can focus more on this iconic duo and Petunia Pig. The Day The Earth Blew Up hits theaters and entertains audiences on March 14.
