Everyone knows that the most popular and high-grossing multimedia franchise ever to exist is Pokemon. It encompasses video games, trading cards, toys, clothing, music, and, more importantly, shows. The brand contains countless quality programs, including the recent Netflix series Pokemon Concierge. This stop-motion series follows a young woman working at a unique resort. Despite being so short, it became well-liked thanks to its many positive qualities. But did you know that its popularity has led to the creation of future episodes?
Gotta Catch ‘Em All
Pokemon was created in the early 90s by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori. The concept came from Tajiri’s childhood when he explored forests, catching insects and tadpoles. Nintendo released the first two games, Pokemon Red and Green, in 1996 for the Gameboy. Japan saw millions of copies sold nationwide before revised versions arrived in America in 1998. Since then, Nintendo and Game Freak have released new generations of games. Each era introduced numerous beloved characters and species of titular creatures.
The success of the first Japanese games brought about the Pokemon Trading Card Game. Its first set was released in 1996, containing 102 cards illustrated by talented artists. Like the games, the TCG became highly popular and eventually came to the United States. But the most prominent development from the Pokemon games was the original mainstream anime. The animated series elevated the popularity of the franchise to new heights. It also led to spin-offs like Pokemon Origins, Pokemon Evolutions, and the recent Pokemon Concierge.
Welcome to the Resort
In a collaboration between Netflix and Dwarf Studios, Pokemon Concierge follows a young woman named Haru. She comes to the Pokemon Resort, where humans and Pokemon vacation together. Haru becomes a new concierge, though her first day has her being a guest. This opportunity allows her to meet her co-workers, superior, and their Pokemon partners. The following day, Haru realizes the resort and her job are about having fun. She then receives her first assignment: befriend a Pokemon and make it happy.
Episode Two of Pokemon Concierge features Haru meeting a shy Psyduck plagued by headaches. And when its headaches get bad, its strong psychic powers cause trouble. She soon realizes the solution is having Psyduck occasionally let out his powers a little. The pair bond, and then the avian Water-Type becomes Haru’s partner. In the next installment, Haru wonders what talent she possesses to help in her job. She also retrieves a water floatie for a Magikarp with a unique star marking.
The final Pokemon Concierge episode showcases Haru happy over a visiting group of Pikachu. She soon meets a young Pokemon trainer named Nao and his unusually reserved Pikachu. He asks for Haru and Psyduck’s help in making his Electric-type partner more outgoing. After trying everything, Haru encourages Nao to understand his Pikachu rather than change it. Nao and Pikachu soon leave the island, and Pikachu expresses itself loudly. Season One closes out with Haru and Psyduck welcoming a massive Wailord to the resort.
New Pokemon Concierge On the Way
Pokemon Concierge became an immediate hit with franchise fans and industry critics. Its low-stakes stories, relaxed atmosphere, and beautiful animation immediately captivated viewers. It’s quite a pleasant change from the typical competitive tone of the mainstream shows. The show essentially grants us a look into an overlooked side of the Pokemon world. It also emphasizes the importance of cooperation and camaraderie among peers and people.
Thanks to its positive qualities and popularity, the story of Pokemon Concierge continues. Fans will see more adventures starring Haru, Psyduck, and their co-workers. Pokemon Company president and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara announced the development during this year’s Pokemon Day. Not only will Haru’s story resume, but new Pokemon guests will appear in Season Two. A corresponding trailer revealed a stop-motion test for a Shinx, Arcanine, and Corphish. What other species we’ll see is a mystery, though they’ll undoubtedly be a welcomed surprise.
Final Thoughts
After binge-watching Pokemon Concierge multiple times, I’ve become a fan of this delightful series. The animation is stunning, and the Pokemon look amazing, appropriate, and cute. The bond between Haru and Psyduck is one of my favorite things about the show. I also love how Psyduck has a starring role outside of the original anime. The program makes you feel like you’re on a tropical vacation with your favorite Pokemon. Season Two brings the fun with Haru, Psyduck, and their friends this September on Netflix.
