Playboi Carti Drops First Single In 4 Years with \”All Red\”

Playboi Carti

To celebrate his 29th birthday, Playboi Carti decided it was better to give than to receive. The Atlanta-based rapper’s new single, “All Red” was first introduced on YouTube Friday to coincide with his Friday the 13th birthday. Within hours, Playboi Carti’s latest single was available to stream through various digital service providers. He proclaimed “All Red” was for the fans on his label’s Instagram page, but the gift received appears bittersweet. With no release date for his album, Music, many comments asked Playboi Carti when this long-delayed album would be dropped.

Pitch Change

According to an article from Billboard, Playboi Carti dropped the pitch of his voice for the “All Red” track. This pitch change drew comparisons to the sound of another famous Atlanta-based rapper, Future. The last album from Carti, “Whole Lotta Red,” features rapping in a much higher register. After listening to songs like “No Sl33p” and “Slay3r,” it was hard to believe that this is music from the same artist. One Instagram user wrote, “Bro sounded more like Future than Future on “All Red.” It certainly doesn’t help that he references putting on a mask, sparking a “Mask Off” connection.

Fun Comments

Despite the Future comparisons, some fans were glad to have access to a new song on their streaming platform of choice. On YouTube, Friday’s release pushed Playboi Carti’s “All Red” to number 6 on Trending for music. In the comment section for the video, many fan accounts seemed to have fun by creating backstories about how Playboi Carti changed their lives. “I’m 74, and my wife used to slow dance to this song back in the 60s,” one YouTube user wrote. “I miss her dearly and this reminded me of her, thank you Carti.”

What About the Album

The comments made to Playboi Carti’s Instagram post were not as kind as those commenting on YouTube. The post contained seven pictures of the upcoming Music album, but many fans wanted to know when to expect a release date. The post included a link to the Playboi Carti website, where three box sets and a digital CD were available for pre-order, but no release date was included.

According to an article by Stereogum,  the Music album does not have cover art or a tracklist.  Although there is not an official release date, there is a deadline. When pre-ordering Music, it states the “product will ship no later than six months from September 12, 2024.”

Final Thoughts

The clock is ticking for Playboi Carti’s Music album release. Although unfamiliar with his full catalog, it should be interesting to see how the other songs stack up against the criticism of a passionate fan base. Hopefully, everyone who pre-orders the album will receive it before St. Patrick’s Day next year. Although there were positive and negative reactions to the single drop, Music is a highly anticipated album from what Billboard called one of the most commercially successful hip-hop artists of the last decade.
