Why Planetary Transits Hit You and Your Friends Differently

Planetary transits in astrology compare the sky right now to your birth chart, and the method behind them is more specific than daily forecasts suggest.

A planetary transit happens when a moving planet lines up, in the current sky, with a position that already exists in a person’s birth chart. That single comparison, current sky against natal chart, is the foundation of nearly every horoscope, forecast and astrological reading published today. Understanding how astrologers make that comparison explains why the same transit can mean something different for two different people.

Here is a breakdown of what a transit actually is, how astrologers decide which ones matter and how to tell a general forecast apart from a reading built around your own chart.

What Exactly Is A Planetary Transit?

A transit occurs when a planet moves into a position in the current sky that astrologers compare to its position in a person’s birth chart, according to Cafe Astrology. In practice, that means an astrologer looks at where, say, Venus sits today and measures the angle it forms with where Venus (or another planet) sat at the exact moment someone was born.

Those angles, called aspects, are what give a transit its tone. A trine, an angle of 120 degrees between two planets, is traditionally considered the most harmonious aspect because it helps the two planets work together smoothly, according to the Skyscript astrology glossary. Other angles carry other meanings, but the trine example shows the basic idea: the geometry between a moving planet and a fixed natal point is what astrologers interpret, not the planet on its own.

How Do Astrologers Read Transits Against A Birth Chart?

The natal chart is weighed heavily whenever a transit is interpreted, and the relative importance of each natal factor shapes the reading, according to Astrodienst, the company behind Astro.com. That is the core of why personal transit work requires personal information. The sky is the same for everyone on a given day, but a birth chart is not, so the same planetary movement lands differently depending on what it touches in each chart.

Astrologers also do not treat every transit as equally important. Astrodienst noted that a yearly forecast covering every transit and progression would run several hundred pages, so its reports select only the most significant ones based on the person’s natal chart. That selectivity is part of the method itself: a trained reading filters the noisy stream of daily planetary movement down to the handful of transits that actually connect to something meaningful in a given chart.

Does It Matter Whether A Planet Was Retrograde In Someone’s Birth Chart?

Yes, and this is one of the clearest examples of how a general forecast and a personal reading can diverge. A planet that was retrograde at the moment of someone’s birth can point to a tendency to express that planet’s themes in a unique way, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Venus is a useful case.

Venus retrograde began Oct. 3 and runs through Nov. 13, according to Cafe Astrology. Colin Bedell, an astrologer quoted by The Old Farmer’s Almanac, described how he approaches clients with a natal Venus retrograde: “Whenever I see a personal planet like Venus retrograde in the (natal) chart, I love to empower the client with the Law of Re’s — so I encourage them to review, research, and reimagine all things Venus. So, financial literacy, clarity of values, and relational intelligence.”

Bedell also pointed out that the same current retrograde reads differently depending on a person’s own chart. “If you’re a natal Venus retrograde, it’s your homecoming,” he said. “You have a bit of an edge at navigating all the experiences with the learning you’ve hopefully acquired after you implement the research.

“If you’re born with a natal Venus direct, you may want to reimagine how you relate to pleasure, finances, and relationships.”

How Can You Tell A General Forecast From A Personal Interpretation?

A general forecast describes what a transit means in broad strokes, based on the planets and aspects involved, without reference to any single person’s chart. A personal interpretation requires knowing someone’s birth chart and checking where their natal planets sit before deciding what a current transit means for them specifically. That distinction matters because the current sky keeps moving regardless of anyone’s birth data.

The sun entered Scorpio on Oct. 23 and will leave the sign on Nov. 22, according to Cafe Astrology. Venus, meanwhile, backed into Libra on Oct. 25 and stays there through Dec. 4, after an earlier stretch in Libra from Aug. 6 to Sept. 10. Those dates describe the sky for everyone.

What they mean for any one person still depends on where those same points, and any aspects they form, land in that person’s own birth chart.

What’s Next

Mercury, which turned retrograde in Scorpio on Oct. 24, stations direct on Nov. 13, the same day Venus ends its retrograde, according to Cafe Astrology. That double shift will change the themes tied to both planets. After that, the next notable sky change arrives when the Sun leaves Scorpio on Nov. 22, and readers following their own charts can check which natal points that move touches.
