Maximilian Schnell walked away from his job and his life in Paris years ago to live on a bicycle, and the new documentary Perfect Road follows him through one of the most demanding stretches of that journey. The film tracks Schnell as he rides through some of Europe’s highest mountain passes, framing his years of nomadic living as both a physical test and a personal reckoning, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The “Perfect Road” documentary cyclist spent close to a decade on the road before the cameras caught up with him. “He ended up living like that for almost 10 years, sleeping in a tent every night,” according to The Hollywood Reporter’s reporting on the film.

Who Is Maximilian Schnell

Schnell gave up a conventional life in Paris to pursue cycling full time, trading an apartment and a job for a tent he pitched wherever he ended a day’s ride. That decision shapes the entire film, which treats his choice not as a stunt but as a sustained way of living that lasted nearly 10 years.

The Mountain Passes And The Challenge

“Perfect Road” follows Schnell on an extreme route through some of Europe’s highest mountain passes. The film doesn’t just document the climbs. It uses the physical grind of the route to explore what has kept Schnell on the road for so long and what, if anything, could pull him off it.

Freedom, Nina And Shifting Priorities

The documentary examines how Schnell’s nomadic lifestyle and the freedom it gives him have shaped his outlook on life. That freedom gets tested through his relationship with his partner, Nina, whose presence in the film pushes Schnell to question his priorities. The tension between a life built around constant movement and a relationship that might ask him to stay still runs through the film’s second half.

How The Film Was Made

“Perfect Road” comes from Danish brothers Adam Bonke and Christian Bonke, who directed the documentary. Elk Film and Dogwoof produced the project. To capture Schnell’s journey, the directors and their cinematographer lived in a campervan for three months, following his route in real time rather than reconstructing it after the fact.

Premiere And Festival Run

“Perfect Road” had its world premiere at the Zurich Film Festival. The documentary later screened at the 70th edition of the BFI London Film Festival, extending its festival run across two major European showcases. No release date or streaming platform for “Perfect Road” has been announced.
