Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Companies, was considering extending an invitation to the grunge rock band to see if they wanted to participate in the exploratory mission. What was the OceanGate Submersible Disaster?
June 18th of 2023 marked the day of the Titan submersible going deep under the sea to tour the Titanic wreckage. The deep-sea vessel was launched off the east coast of Newfoundland, Canada. It was slated to go roughly 13,000 feet under the sea to check out the wreckage of the Titanic.
Shortly after its launch from St. John’s, all communication was lost with the OceanGate deep-sea vessel. The icebreaker MV Polar Prince stated that the comms stopped around an hour and a half after the dive commenced. Four days later, it was discovered that the vessel had imploded, killing all five people aboard.
Netflix’s OceanGate Documentary Takes a Look Back
On Wednesday, June 11, Netflix released a documentary titled “Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster.” The program looks back at the events leading up to and the doomed vessel itself. It also gives viewers a glimpse into the construction of the deep-sea pod and its passengers.
Killed in the incident were a British Pakistani businessman and his son, a Titanic historian, a French navigator who was the copilot of the Titanic, and Stockton Rush. Rush was the CEO of OceanGate and copilot on the vessel.
What About Pearl Jam?
The popular band Pearl Jam was referred to in Netflix’s OceanGate documentary. CEO Stockton Rush, seeking to gain attention for his company and mission, was interested in inviting celebrities and famous musicians to accompany him in his deep-sea submersible. At one point, Rush had mentioned a floating city that could be submerged. Although these concepts of his were never followed through, it isn’t very comforting to think that Pearl Jam could have been aboard.
It was all in the name of exposure. The Titan had conducted several successful missions to the Titanic wreckage field over the years prior, but it had encountered some issues that foreshadowed the ill-fated voyage of 2023. CEO Stockton Rush himself had heard some knocking on a previous expedition. It was determined that the Titan implosion was likely caused by a crack in its carbon fiber hull.
Conclusion: A Few Final Thoughts
The June 18th incident from 2023 that claimed five lives will not be forgotten. We’re very glad that members of Pearl Jam were not among the passengers on this voyage. Hopefully, lessons can be learned from this ill-fated OceanGate mission, and such an atrocity can be prevented in the future.
