As the devastating wildfires sweep through the Los Angeles area, various events throughout the state have been disrupted. One of the latest casualties of the Los Angeles wildfires is the announcement of the highly anticipated 2025 Oscar nominations, which has been postponed indefinitely. While the Oscars ceremony remains untouched, the wildfires have forced Hollywood to change its plans.

Oscars Postponed Nominations Announcement

Initially, the reveal of nominees for the 97th Academy Awards was slated for January 17 before being pushed back to January 19. Along with this delay, the Film Academy extended the nominations voting period by two days. Moreover, the Chief Executive of the film academy, Bill Kramer, announced in a letter he’d given members that January 15 would be the new deadline.

For everyone affected by the catastrophic fires ravaging Southern California, the academy expressed its heartfelt sympathies to those impacted. With many of its members and colleagues in the industry calling the L.A. area home, the academy stated that their thoughts are with the people affected by the Los Angeles wildfires during this difficult time.

Besides the nominees’ announcement, the Oscars also canceled its traditional in-person “bake-off” events in the Los Angeles area. Originally scheduled for Saturday, these events provide a platform for shortlisted contenders to showcase their work, specifically in the sound, hair and makeup, and visual effects branches. Although the Los Angeles event has been canceled, the sound bake-offs in the Bay Area, New York, and London will proceed as planned.

However, the hair and makeup and visual effects branches will replace their bake-offs with virtual discussions instead. These conversations ensure that the judging process at the Oscars can go on despite the disruptions caused by the wildfires. Additionally, a screening of nominees for the International Feature category has been postponed to a future date.

Hollywood Forced to Adapt

Notably, the delay in announcing the Oscars nomination coincides with the wildfires and wind ravaging multiple locations in L.A. County. By Wednesday afternoon, the disastrous wildfires had claimed five people’s lives and completely destroyed over 1,100 structures. Sadly, the situation remains dire as the fires wreak havoc across the region. Amidst the chaos, the film industry has been forced to change plans and adapt to the unfolding crisis. On early Wednesday, a wave of postponements and cancellations occurred for several Oscar precursor events.

Those affected by the wildfires include the British Academy of Film and TV Arts Tea Party, the AFI Awards luncheon, and the Critics Choice Awards. Previously slated for January 12, the Critics Choice Awards postponed its 30th annual ceremony to January 26. Following these announcements, the Producers Guild of America and Writers Guild of America also opted to delay their award nominations. While the Producers Guild will share its nominations on Sunday, the Writers Guild will do the same on Monday.

Despite the catastrophic disaster and numerous schedule changes, the Oscars ceremony date remains unchanged on March 2. While good news, this adjustment to the nomination announcements highlights the film industry’s adaptability in responding to the crisis. Breaking out on January 7, the devastating wildfires have plunged numerous areas in Los Angeles into total chaos.
