Not my family; The Monique Smith Story

Not My Family: The Monique Smith story is about a woman who discovers her family is not actually her family.  As a child, she endured much abuse at the hands of those she thought were her family.   Monique suffered many years of verbal, physical, and sexual abuse (from one of her uncles). This movie is about her life and discovering her true identity.

In this terrifying movie, The Monique Smith story, she takes you through the journey of her life from when she was a child until she was an adult.  It’s a long and hard road, but with her will to fight, she discovers who she really is. The Monique Smith story is a horrific, tragic story, but in the end, Monique wins!

Not My Family: The Monique Smith Story

Monique (Symbolie) Smit,h what her supposed mother named her, was raised in West Baltimore.  The Monique Smith story dives into her childhood, and how it was filled with beatings and abuse from her mother and two of her uncles (now deceased).  She was in fact sexually abused by her uncles when she was just a small child. She had to walk on eggshells around her mother and never knew when her mother would snap. She always wondered if her mother had any compassion or love for her at all.

At the age of 18, Monique Smith escaped and headed to Florida, where she started getting involved in sex work. She met a woman at the bus stop; the woman offered her a place to stay in exchange for Monique performing sex work and paying this woman.  Monique eventually escaped that life and began a new life for herself.  She got married but later got divorced when things didn’t work out. Eventually, she ended up going back to her mother’s temporarily, but then left again and was married a second time.

In her late 20s, Monique started becoming suspicious of her identity when her mother refused to provide her with her birth certificate and social security card. When doing more research, Monique soon discovered that there were multiple inconsistencies in the documents of her identity. There was no record of her being born under the name she was given.

With the help of a detective and a genetic genealogist test, Monique discovered who her family was.  Her birth mother’s name was Margaret Conyers.  She reportedly had seven children from seven different men and died at the age of 34 due to a drug overdose.

Soon after the discovery of her bloodline relatives, Monique connected with her long-lost sisters, one of whom was actively searching for her.
