‘Nightbitch Trailer Shows Amy Adams Feral Morphing Into A Dog

Motherhood can be a pain sometimes, and Amy Adam’s upcoming film ‘Nightbitch’ takes it to the extreme. Based on Rachel Yoder’s debut novel, ‘Nightbitch’ follows a stay-at-home mother who has given up her dreams of becoming an artist to raise her son while her husband is away all week for his job, leaving her isolated. As the stress begins to get to her, she soon believes she is transforming into a dog, and a more feral side of her begins to unleash. The film’s trailer dropped earlier this week and has been met with mixed reactions from fans of the book and those curious by the film’s wild premise.

‘Nightbitch’ The Book

Released in July 2021, Yoder’s debut novel soon began making its rounds in the BookTok scene. Currently holding a rating of three and a half stars out of five on Goodreads, ‘Nightbitch’ is a surrealist, funny, dark novel in which the reader follows the unnamed mother’s descent into madness as her transformation begins to change her outlook on motherhood.

Director Marielle Heller, who directed ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ and ‘Diary of a Teenage Girl,’ has taken on this project and written the screenplay alongside Yoder. ‘Invincible’ voice actor Scoot McNairy will star alongside Adams as her inattentive husband. The cast also includes ‘Your Place or Mine’ actress Zoe Chao as well as Elle Thomas and Adrienne Rose White as other stay-at-home moms Adam’s character befriends in her local library mommy and me group. The film will take an interesting new approach to motherhood with brutal honesty about the stress and hardships that come with the title.

Fan Reaction

While the novel has its own cult following, many seem to be worried about the film’s more comedic approach compared to the novel’s more psychological thriller approach. While the book doesn’t shy away from the comedic side of the ridiculous premise, the uncomfortable nature of it is more of the book’s tone. Nightbitch’s tone felt a lot more introspective and cynical and dark alongside the humour… but this feels more… commercially funny. Please god, tell me that the trailer is setting this up to be lighter as a misdirect.” wrote one spectator.

The book may be better than the movie, which is a typical trope for films adapted from books; however, this is not always the case, and sometimes the film is better or even brings a whole new perspective from its source material. Still, regardless of whether the movie does well at the box office or not, the book will always be there to read for those curious about the movie’s source.

Final Thoughts

While movie trailers deceive viewers isn’t new, it is hard to decide whether Heller missed the mark on Yoder’s novel until it premieres. ‘Nightbitch’ will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7th. Originally set to go straight to streaming on Hulu, the film will be released in theaters on December 6th.

With almost three months until the film’s release date to a wider audience, it’s hard to say if the movie missed the mark of its source material. Until the ‘Nightbitch’ trailer teases it as an out-of-the-box dark comedy that will for sure be an interesting watch for lovers of the book and for new fans alike.
