Police were alerted on July 15 of a 7-year-old boy in critical condition. Previously, he was admitted to the Dardanelle Regional Medical Center early Tuesday morning by his parents. Chief of the Russellville Police Department David Ewing said, “When you got medical professionals using the word torture – mental and physical torture, that’s just brutal facts, and that story is hard to tell.”
The boy was described as being extremely underweight, limp, and pale, according to the hospital’s staff. The boy only weighed 28 pounds by the time he was admitted to the hospital. According to Doctors, the boy’s condition was described as “near fatality.” Ewing said, “What we’ve learned from a part of our investigation is that the child was found unresponsive by the parents, according to statements and what was told to medical staff, and they brought him by a personal vehicle to Dardanelle Regional Hospital.”
He added, “There was no ambulance call, no 911 call, and St. Mary’s Hospital is a lot closer than Dardanelle from their residence, which was a concern in the question that we wanted answered.” After the Detectives got search warrants for the residence, they found more gruesome details about the alleged abuse of the child. According to officials, Christopher and Katelyn Freeman confessed to locking their son in the closet and neglecting to seek medical attention out of fear of the consequences of their actions.
According to the Police, they found “unfit” living conditions for the child after searching the 800 block of Sandstone Circle. The findings revealed a closet that was turned into a makeshift room, and that the boy was confined in the room for a long period of time, while being frequently bound by rope. Cash and a lot of food were found at the home by the authorities. Ewing said, “When the detectives got in there, they inspected a closet, and when they inspected it, they noticed that there was urine, feces on the floor.”
He added, “There were scratch marks on the dry wall, and even the inside door handle was more so than you would expect inside of a door handle for a closet, and they started developing evidence that the child or someone had been kept in that closet, secured there.”
Christopher and Kateyln Freeman were arrested for their heinous actions. They were both charged with first-degree battery and endangering the welfare of a child. In describing the crime, Ewing said, “This was very brutal — the facts of this case are very brutal, horrific. Personally, it shocked us to our core, no doubt. Not just myself, but the investigators and everyone who was involved in this case. But that just really set our resolve to get this matter investigated quickly, to hold those accountable and bring them to justice.”
