Former Fleetwood Mac Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, 76, Brazenly Attacked by Stalker

Lindsey Buckingham, former guitarist for Fleetwood Mac, attacked by stalker

Nobody ever said being a rock and roll legend was easy, but Fleetwood Mac’s former guitarist and sometime frontman Lindsey Buckingham has been through the wringer more times than most. Between highly publicized band drama and severe health scares, the last few years have tested him immensely. Now, fans are reeling from the news that the musician was the victim of a frightening attack in Southern California. The 76-year-old guitarist and vocalist was targeted on a Wednesday morning in Santa Monica, leaving the music community shocked and deeply concerned for his safety.

The Details of the Santa Monica Ambush

When you hear the word “attack,” your mind immediately goes to the worst-case scenario – especially when it involves a beloved music icon in his seventies. Fortunately, the situation could have been far more tragic. Per US Magazine, while arriving for a scheduled appointment in Santa Monica, Buckingham was ambushed by a woman who threw an unknown liquid substance at him from a container.

It is the kind of brazen, daylight incident that leaves you looking over your shoulder. According to initial reports from law enforcement, the substance didn’t cause physical harm, and Buckingham managed to walk away uninjured. Still, the emotional toll of such a violation of personal space is high and extremely unsettling. Nobody should have to face a frightening ambush simply while trying to go about their day, let alone an artist who has given the world so much musical joy for over five decades.

A Chilling History of Stalking

What makes this attack even more unsettling is that it wasn’t a random act of violence by a stranger. The suspect is someone with a highly disturbing history of stalking the musician. Authorities identified the woman as Michelle Dick, a person who has made Buckingham’s life very difficult for several years.

According to the LA Times, Los Angeles Police Department’s Threat Management Unit, working alongside Santa Monica police, stated the suspect had previously been slapped with a restraining order in late 2024. Then Buckingham had to take legal action after she reportedly loitered around his family’s property, left threatening voicemails, and even taped bizarre photo collages to his mailbox.

In a harrowing prior incident, she made a false emergency call claiming there were gunshots at his home. This resulted in police putting him in handcuffs while they cleared his house. The fact that she was able to track down the exact time – and exact location of his private appointment to plan this attack shows a level of premeditation that is truly terrifying.

A Relentless String of Hardships for Lindsey Buckingham

Buckingham is long overdue for a break. This recent attack is just the latest in a long string of personal and professional hardships. In 2018, he was famously dismissed from Fleetwood Mac, leading to a bitter legal dispute over lost wages and a highly publicized rift with his former bandmates – in particular with singer Stevie Nicks.

If losing his place in the band he helped build wasn’t enough, he suffered a severe heart attack in 2019. The emergency triple bypass surgery saved his life, but unfortunately the insertion of a breathing tube damaged his vocal cords. For a man whose entire identity is tied to his voice and his music, the prospect of never singing again was a devastating blow. He has spent the pandemic years quietly and humbly working on his recovery. It’s heartbreaking to see someone who has fought so hard to regain his health and peace of mind be subjected to an unprovoked attack.

Looking Ahead: New Music and Healing

Despite the chaos, Buckingham’s resilience remains one of his most defining traits. Just last week, he shared an optimistic update with his followers on social media, announcing that he is only one song away from finishing a brand-new solo album. Nice! There’s also a highly anticipated Fleetwood Mac documentary in the works, and rumors of a reconciled relationship with former bandmate Nicks.

While law enforcement continues their investigation and prepares to make an arrest, the collective hope is that Buckingham and his family can finally find some peace. He has survived heart surgery, bad band breakups, and now a scary targeted attack. It is time for the rock legend to be able to enjoy his legacy – and his life – without having to constantly look over his shoulder.
