Welcome back to Shadyside where evil never dies. R.L. Stine’s Fear Street: Prom Queen follows the iconic Fear trilogy which concluded in 2021 after being released consecutively in three installments (1994, 1978, and 1666). These films are based on Stine’s slasher thriller book series. They travel further back in time and finally end with Fear Street Part 3: 1666. This fourth installment of the series is considered a sequel to the trilogy and is a standalone film based on the book, 1992’s The Prom Queen.
Synopsis and Cast
The sinister town known as Shadyside is not a place people typically visit. Evil lurks around every corner and just when the community members think it has been defeated, it shows up again in the future. Fear Street: Prom Queen is no different. In 1988, the It Girls were busy campaigning to be crowned Prom Queen. When a surprising nominee is added to the court, girls go missing, making the newbie realize she is in for one interesting evening.
Fear Street: Prom Queen is one of those films with an endless cast list because it aims to explore the social complexities of the characters. The featured cast includes India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Chris Klein, Lili Taylor, Katherine Waterston, and Ariana Greenblatt. The supporting cast includes Rebecca Ablack and Damian Rome from Ginny & Georgia, Ryan Rosery from Mayor of Kingstown, and Cecilia Lee from My Dreams of You.
Words From The Director
Director and co-writer Matt Palmer told Tudum, “We’re back in Shadyside and the year is 1988.” He continued, “With Senior Prom just two days away the race for prom queen is already heating up, but when somebody starts slaughtering the prom queen candidates, all hell is set to break loose. Think classic 80s slasher and all the fun that entails but with compelling characters, needle drops, dancing, and a whole lot more!”
Palmer explained that Fear Street: Prom Queen is more than a horror or slasher film. It also dives deep into 80’s kids’ high school and family lives and addresses the challenges they face. These movies bring a sense of nostalgia to their viewers and heighten their anxiety simultaneously.
Thoughts on Fear Street: Prom Queen
The Fear Street films were inspired by other great and notorious slasher franchises such as Scream and Friday the 13th. In each one, the characters fight for their lives after brutal slayings occur. The series is captivating because it is presented in reverse chronological order starting in 1994 moving to 1978 and finally ending in 1966. From 1966, it wraps around to 1994 to provide some closure. Fear Street: Prom Queen is more of a solo film with minor references to the trilogy.
It’s a must-see if you love R.L. Stine books, the previous Fear Streets, or slasher films. An official teaser has been released and the movie will exclusively hit Netflix on May 23, 2025. The producers sure know how to advertise to create impatience amongst their fans. What is supposed to be a fun and monumental life in a teenager’s life quickly turns into the worst night they could have ever imagined.
