Marvel Adds Orange Is The New Black Star To Fantastic Four Cast

Natasha Lyonne is the latest big name to join the Marvel franchise! On May 15, 2024, Deadline reported that the Orange is the New Black star is headed to the big screen. She will star in Marvel’s latest film, an adaptation of The Fantastic Four.

According to reports, the MCU version of the film will take place in the 1960s, with no year currently specified. Although the comics are set in the fictional Central City, fans wonder if Marvel will continue the pattern of setting their movies in real-life places (Spider-Man takes place in New York City, Black Widow lives in San Francisco, Captain America: Civil War is set in Bucharest, Berlin, and Siberia). Who is Natasha Lyonne?

Lyonne is most well-known for her role on Orange is the New Black, where she played Litchfield Penitentiary inmate Nicky Nichols. The character gained popularity over Lyonne’s seven seasons on the show, particularly for Nichols’ highly beloved relationship with fellow inmate Lorna Morello (played by Yael Stone). Lyonne is also known for her role on Netflix’s Russian Doll, which she also created and executive produced, wrote, and directed. Most recently, she starred in Poker Face from Knives Out director Rian Johnson.

What is The Fantastic Four About?

Fantastic Four is the story of four individuals – Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm – who take part in an experimental space flight that exposes them to cosmic rays, in turn giving them superhuman powers. Reed Richards is given the power to stretch his body to unprecedented lengths, while Sue Storm has the ability to become invisible at the drop of a hat. Johnny Storm can manipulate fire and has the ability to set anything aflame, particularly himself. Ben Grimm’s power is to transform into a creature called “The Thing,” an orange being with incredible strength and durability.

Other Adaptations of The Fantastic Four

This isn’t the first time The Fantastic Four has been adapted to the big screen. In 2005, a version of the film was released titled Fantastic Four. The film is an origin story of sorts and depicts the foursome as they first discover their powers after a cosmic radiation exposure alters their bodies’ chemistries. Then, they must use their powers to defeat the evil Doctor Victor Von Doom. The film stars Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, and Julian McMahon.

Another adaptation of the film was released in 2015, this time starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell. Fantastic Four (2015) depicts a similar story to that of the original, however, this time, the foursome is transported to an alternate dimension, where they discover their powers. They must again use those powers to defeat Victor Von Doom, this time played by Toby Kebbell. The 2015 version of the film received poor reviews and was overall rated worse than its predecessor.
